This topic always makes me sad, because I wonder what a Jim Shooter / Valiant relaunch would have been like. But then I think of the Dark Horse / Gold Key launch... outside of Magnus.... meh...

My guess is Dinesh and Co. didn't come across as consummate professionals in the early days, which has also been said by Priest and Bright with regards to Q&W. But they seem to have genuinely been trying, again as evidenced by the outcome of the Priest and Bright tension.

Is this thing between VEI and Priest & Bright documented somewhere that I could read?

honestly, i thought dinesh was a life long valiant fan, and any life long valiant fan would not have that *SQUEE* go down that way.. Unless he was/is a total puss, and was getting bullied by other people into making those ridiculous chioces.. wtf dude seriously...
I always wondered what happened with that Harbinger movie, I didnt know about the lapham creator rights thing.. so now that there may be a new Harbinger movie, are they gonna have to shell out some cash to Shooter and Lapham.. I *SQUEE* hope so..

There are no creator rights here. FWIW this was all discussed before. VEI bought the IP at bankruptcy auction. These auctions only work if the IP is completely unencumbered (otherwise no one would buy them).

Lapham, Shooter, et. al had the same opportunity to purchase these IP as Dinesh and Jason. They chose not to do so. Both creators would have been welcomed with open arms at the start. Shooter burned his bridge and Lapham simply didn't want to work with them.

But now that VEI's efforts are paying off they owe something to Lapham and Shooter? Seriously?

This is what I thought I remembered after all the discussions about Priest & Bright before Quantum & Woody started. Anything that was possibly owed to any creators, or any deals they had made with Acclaim/Valiant in the 90's were all voided by the bankruptcy. That company that had any such debts or deals was no more. VEI has no legal obligation to anything from that former company.

It's just like Jack Kirby who created Captain America, FF, Iron Man, . . . Kirby was work-for-hire and didn't own any rights to those characters.
I think it's the same in other industries. If you work as a researcher in a pharmaceutical company and discovered a wonder drug, the company owns that and not the researcher.

I could see that being done in the credits for the movies. No harm in that and it would be factually accurate.
