BTW, I actually emailed Jim Shooter about the "Jonesy" chick in Magnus #2. Here was my email with Jim's response...lol:

My script for Turok #1 started with 26 pages of reference for the artist, the result of extensive research. I'm trying to get things right.

Jonesy was named after Al Capp's "Stupefyin' Jones" and was modeled after Julie Newmar, who played Stupefyin' Jones on Broadway. Julie Newmar, in her prime, was stupefyin' indeed.

Good morning Mr. Shooter,

I just read the first issue of the new Turok series last night and I have to give you major props for the authentic portrayal of native american culture in this story I really enjoyed how Turok and Andar have the slight lack of communication in the beginning of the issue, and are aware of each other's dialects and where they are from based on that. My best friend Jacques is an Apache and he has told me of his experience as a crown dancer, and how each region of the U.S. has it's own drum beat pattern. He can listen to a song and immediately tell if it is "North," "Plains," "South," "Mountain," etc.

Also, I have to ask you about a character in Magnus #2...the woman Jonesy Was she named after me? This is probably my fan-boy ego asking...lol...but I thought it fun to ask

Thanks again for an awesome duo of comics and I can't wait to see more connections between the books reveal themselves as time goes on

Some items i've noticed so far:

- Phil Solar's son had a very "native" appearance in Solar #2...could he be related to Turok somehow?
- The "storm" in Turok #1 seemed pretty similar to the storm in Solar #2

For whatever reason, I allowed the DH books to stack up on my night stand. I finished reading Solar 2&3, Magnus 2 and Turok 1.

To my surprise I’ve started to change my feelings on the books. With the art change I'm much more into Solar, more than satisfied with the consistency and story development in Magnus, and (like Jonesy) impressed with the authenticity in Turok.

As stand alone books I think I’m more into the art, characters, and story in Turok. As a whole Solar is still my least favorite but as long as it continues to improve and I’m enjoying the other two books I’m a bit more inclined to stick with Solar a little lnger.

Oh, congrats to Jonesy and Dave for being printed—cool stuff!

I finally got down to Amarillo yesterday and picked up Doc Solar 3.

I really like Moloch. He's an enjoyable villain.

He's the kind of villain that is so disgusting that it will make Solar's hopeful defeat of him that much more enjoyable to witness

Dr. Solar seems to be improving with each issue, even if it's still not as good as I would like it to be. The art is competent, but still not great. The story has gotten a bit more interesting, although I do find it to be a little silly that Solar is acting like a teenage kid where it comes to Gail. I'll stick around another issue to see if the improvement continues, although I would not be too unhappy if the book was taken over by another artist.

BTW, no offense to the two gentlemen from the board who had their letters printed, but I find the letters page to be a joke. Nothing but positive letters and the editor comments are incredibly stupid attempts to be clever. Are you telling me that they receive nothing but positive letters?

I can certainly understand your point. I was flipping through an old issue of Gold Key Doctor Solar the other day and the letters in there ran the gamut from positive to negative. A reader had a real problem with Solar being so powerful, even back in the 60's

I think one of the best letters pages I remember reading was in an issue of Night Thrasher; Fabian Nicieza told a short story involving racial tension, and the letters page responses in a couple issues were very insightful and all over the place.

Fun fact: the best letter of this particular bunch was written by a "Kevin Grevioux," who I determined later was the same Kevin Grevioux that ended up writing the most recent volume of New Warriors...AND is the same Kevin Grevioux who was the Lycan named "Raze" in the "Underworld" film series

I felt like reading something light / cheesy so I finally got around to reading Doc Solar #3.

I think this was a bad choice of initial storyline (combined with the art problems in #1). The problem is the main group of antagonists are inherently one-note caricatures by concept. It's very hard to do any real character development or interaction with them. I agree 100%. I can't connect to a God and a bunch of creations who were never human with lives.

I actually like the art in this issue. It's a bit dark in spots, but that's fine. If I have any complaints art-wise, it's the pube-like look of the beard. That's a bit annoying.

I'll probably pick these up in cheap bins going forward. The story has gotten a bit better, but it's not anything that makes me want to buy it new. Nothing fresh......

Yep. I looked at the names of the people who wrote the letters to see if I recognized the names, but I didn't read any of the letters. It was pretty apparent right off the bat that they are only going to print the butt kissing letters.

On the other hand, I'll read damn near every bit of the Robert Kirkman letter pages. He prints anything that's interesting - good or bad as long as there is some merit or entertainment value.

Dark Horse used to print some excellent letters pages in Ghost and X. I remember one guy who found Ghost to be a man-hating book and wrote 3 or 4 letters over a period of about 6 or 7 months. The editor did not make fun of the writer but did try to "Explain" the process that the editor felt the reader/writer had misunderstood and opened up the debate to other readers, who chimed in with a pretty balanced take on the issue. I have a lot of respect for things like that. Green Lantern, after Emerald Twilight, had many similiar "negatives". I think that comics lost some of their integrity and fun when Marvel and DC dispensed with the columns.
