I have this discussion with my wife all the time.

It's a battle tunic! AND it's energy diffusive.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! The other day, I was reading some Magnus books and started going on about the genius of the early books, and when I showed her the covers, she was like, "Dude, he's wearing a skirt."

My response: "Just shows how much more of a MAN he is!"

She said "Whatever..." but we know better, gents!!!

Russ Manning.

The boots and belt were white because he assumed boots and belts were either black or brown and he didn't care either way if Magnus' boots and belt were black or brown so he didn't put any colour notes in the original sketch design. The finished product shows up and the boots are white.

It's always before Labour Day in the future!

IT WAS A DRESS!! It was thin, and showed off WAY to much leg. Then later on he topped it off with that gold thing that didn't make it any better.

Then we have Shadowman in spandex, and then nut hugging leather pants. HELLO JIM MORISON WANTS HIS PANTS BACK!

Dr Mirage, who wears that to go skiing? His wife was wearing something more butch.

Don't even get me started on Darque.

Just think of it as a "futuristic kilt" if it really bothers you that much. I imagine that's where Manning got the inspiration in the first place. After all, what's old in fashion is always new again at some point down the road.

I wear a dress people think I am gay, Magnus wears one and people defend it. Just not fair.

When you get your own comic book title, we'll let you call your dress a battle tunic.....

I'd go so far as to say if Russ Manning dressed our friend OrangeRibbon in a dress, I'd defend him.

There’s something about a red dress...

Image

...I mean battle tunics. :thumb:

Why would a real man wear a dress?

"it was a benefit walk/run/drinking fest"

That explains everything.

This must be Mariah Carey at some comic show—great Magnus "tunic" with white boots but no belt. Pretty close, right?

The girls up top must be some sort of Goph girls—not too sure what they’re doing...

The back-up dancers don't shave or otherwise remove body hair?

Russ Manning wrote:I had submitted costume and character studios to Chaise, and these boiled down to two... a pair of trunks, red, of the material his whole suit is now, and a pair of soles that stuck to the bottom of his feet (no straps), and nothing else.

The second costume was a sleeveless jump-suit like everyone else wears in the book. We chose the trunks as being more distinctive and simple. I then illoed the whole 27 pager, with MAGNUS in a pair of metal-mesh trunks and strapless sandals.

The artwork went back east and bounced back with a request to put some clothes on the guy. Tarzan could go around bare-chested because of the jungle (I guess), but not MAGNUS! Among the designs for the costume that I then submitted was the one MAGNUS now wears EXCEPT that I had indicated blue-black boots. Obviously, the red suit was the one chosen, and I went through the entire artwork, putting MAGNUS into a ceramic-durium tunic. In the margin of the first page artwork, I made color notes to the colorist, calling for red on the suit, red-brown on his hair,... and figuring that no colorist needed to a color note to know that boots are either blue-black or dark brown, I made no suggestion for boot color. Hense... no boot color!
/Magnus

Didn't know that. Nice little nugget of truth.

The old men of the Valiant universe shyed away from all this crossdressing, you dont see Gilad or Armstrong in a 'battle tunic'.
