1) Mike Deodato Jr - to go from JRJR (who is in my top 3 all time favorite artists list) to this *SQUEE* clown on ASM was one of the most brutal transitions i've ever seen...

2) Alex Ross - everything new looks like everything he did 10 year ago, except now it just looks stale...

3) Frank Cho - can't draw a correct looking foot to save his life...or anything else for that matter

4) Adam Hughes - i've always wanted to go up to him at a convention and commission him to draw me a nice farm scene with a house and barn, a dog, and a broken down car in the driveway, maybe some trees, but without any sultry looking females to be seen...i think his head might explode from trying to process the idea...

(this thread is making my head hurt...)

I'll be the one to say it... Joe Quesada. Have you seen some of the covers he has been putting out ? And really... I LOVE Event Comics Ash (and thanks for the free books tssegery) but Quesada reeeeaaaallly didnt draw Ash that well (IMO) and then when Ramos took the reigns ? (oh crap, I just threw up in my mouth) LOL

My list of crappy over-rated artists are:

Quesada
Ramos
Liefeld
McFarland
Bachelo (Chris ?)
(oh yeah and the schmutz that drew the new Cyberforce books, last name Lee - not Jim Lee)
I love Alex Ross' work but he puts WAY too much of a politcal spin into his work, so for that I have a bit of distain for him and I used to worship everything that he did but geez, make comics and leave the damn politics out of it.

I am sure that I could go on.

I was going to say Todd McFarlene. A lot of people put him out to be this prolific artist, if it wasn't for his run on Amazing no one would have gave two SQUEES about Spawn or anything he has done at Image. I also thought once his characters were out of costumes they just looked horrible.

Have to throw Pat Lee in here and i think he was the Lee who did Cyberforce new series.

That man can draw transformers but nothing else.

Leinil Yu, how Secret Invasion is selling so many copies with this guy drawing it is beyond me, I bought the first issue and couldn't finish it. :twocents: His style just looks too dirty for my tastes.

Have to agree with most of the guys mentioned especially JRJR.

Have to throw Tim Sale and Joe Mad in the mix.

Joe Mad - Ultimates 3 was dog toss both art and writing.

Tim Sale - A guy regarded as one of the best Batman artists out there but can't draw Batman. What is that about? Also his stuff on Heroes was really bland.

Have to say about Adam Hughes, yeah he does do a lot of sultry females but he did debut doing comics for Penthouse so what did you expect. Want the art without the girls, try his little run on JLI. I always thought it was Macguire and I love Macguire's stuff so there is definitely something else to his work.

I’d have to agree with Alex Ross but it’s his own arrogance and pride that especially puts me off—Todd McFarlane isn’t much better either.

I would agree. In the mid 90's I really thought his style was neat, but as time progressed I think all of his faces look the same, and his women are always manly looking.

I totally agree dude.

He is really good but overhyped as he was the first person to bring that style to the mainstream.
Its almost like the comics world wont accept anyone else doing similar work as Alex Ross did it first and they are just copying him, but in reality its a style of painting and so therefore everyone who does pencils and inks are all copycats too.

I dont want to put the guy down personally as he really does some lovely bits, but he is held in way too high regard.

Amen
I agree. Look at Deodata's painted work on Innovation's Beauty & The Beast - totally blows Alex Ross out of the water (and pre-dates him too) in my opinion!
Hell, look at Russ Manning's Magnus covers.

My wife wants to hang some of my old GK Magnus issues on the wall as art she loves them so much.

THATS the turd bucket I was talking about... just because of him, I will give away at least the first six new Cyberforce books that I have by him. Just pay shipping (you will be ousted by the first guy I promised them to but I totally forget who that was... but I JUST found them, they still look like a mis-carriage found in a bus station) (SORRY, but I really hate those books that much)

You got THAT right. I SERIOUSLY collect The Ultimates but I can't buy them at cover price and will wait and find them for fifty cents or someone who is finished wiping their butt with them and puts them in the trash for me to pick up.

You are kidding right???

No other artist has had as much impact on comics as Kirby. He created and produced more in a month than many artists do in a year. The man created excitement in comics and made them fun again.

You are calling the creator of the Avengers, Black Panther, Captain America,Daredevil, Eternals, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Tales of Suspense, Tales to Astonish, and X-Men Over rated. :!: :!: :!:

I will give Kirby the respect that he is due (as I do to many of the other greybeards in the comic biz). His art was amazing FOR THAT TIME PERIOD. If he were a new face in comics today (meaning right now kind of today), he would not make it as that art style has died out.

If he drew comics today, I would not buy them and I may be going out on a limb here but I don't think that many of us would buy them either. That ship has sailed but the art style has been placed on a pillar. Back in the day, Kirby was king. Today there are so many talented artists out there and Jack's art style could not stand up to it.

I don't think that there are many of us here on the board that were around when 'comics were dull and unexciting' so to say that "The man created excitement in comics and made them fun again." is second hand knowledge based off research. I seem to remember Topps doing some 'Kirby stuff'... now $.25 fodder. Jack is REALLY in the spotlight because he was the poster child for getting screwed over by Marvel and others on owning his art and ideas and not being paid accordingly for them. Kirby would have a great idea but he could never own it because it belonged to 'the man'. Personally (keeping in mind I am no longer 'young' by many standards), even I don't remember when comics were dull and Kirby revitalizing the industry, I just remember him being there and me enjoying Captain America (side note: does anyone have a copy the Captain America issue that had the 'Mad Bomb' ? It is among the first comics that I remember as a young young child and I am looking for a copy... if anyone has one or has a lead on one, PLEASE let me know).

I don't think that Kirby is OVER rated. For his time in comics, he really was the King. But like I said, that time has passed so to even include him in this thread is a bit pale. The man is a legend and therefore untouchable IMO. I am not a great GREAT fan of his art but I appreciated it when I was a kid. But today, I wouldn't buy it.

Now stick with artist from the 90s up to current ? LOTS of bad artists out there and we all have opinions... opinions are like @ssholes, everybody has one and they all stink. I've got my artists whom I would LOVE to break their fingers and others I am eager to walk up to at a convention and say 'thank you for what you have done for comics'. Artists can be the same way.

Art in comics has come SUCH a long way. Just look at the first Spider-Man issues or the first Batman issues... the art was HORRID. But we have had great artist on both since then, only improving all the time. I have to sit back and really shake my head in disgust sometimes these days at what actually gets printed in todays books. Marvel is especially bad at hiring 3rd graders with a dull pencil to draw a popular book out of the blue.

No matter what though... I can tell you that I hate HATE Rob Liefeld's work but when you sit down with the guy.... one of the nicest guys on the planet and SO much energy pours out of him, really positive energy. It is what keeps me from totally ripping on the man for the atrocities that he has committed against mankind in comics.

And as a counter to all this, thereby balancing the cosmos once again... I give you: viewtopic.php?p=529010#529010
