Who were some of the most overhyped artists that you remember from the past and what are they doing now?

I dunno, I loved his Moon Knight run ...maraxusofkeld wrote:Stephen Platt comes to mind......
Though the anatomy was similar to Liefeld in some panels, it still looked cool
*Exaggerated*

*But still cool*

Indeed he was overhyped despite his incredible first work on those moon knight issues that breathed some much needed air into a really appaling comic book.maraxusofkeld wrote:Stephen Platt comes to mind......
I did finally discover what was wrong with his style in the early 2000's when he did soul Saga.
It took me two issues to be fair as i couldnt see for looking.
I had said to a group of friends and customers that his style was pretty but somehting was nagging me deeply about his style and maybe what was missing, then it hit me.
All of his pictures are face on still shots.
No angles, vainshing points, dynamics etc etc.
This is pretty much true of all hype artsists and the ones who can do those important things do it badly all the same so thats why they belong in this thread too.

Thats fair enough and to be fair there were times i really enjoyed his work.x-omatic wrote:I have to disagree here. I loved his work on Punisher War Zone and his run on Spider-man. I have been a fan of his work for a very long time.Tim wrote:John Romita Jr.

When i first saw it early 80's on AMSPidy i was like this is different, but i t grew on me and slowly he did other books and his style changed and became what it is today throught Iron man and DD which was very cool, but then slowly it became more bulky and less enjoyable with every character looking way too similar.
I always go back to thing that irks me most and its his ghost like women and children who all look like they are on smack with broken noses.
Awful blandness now and WWH proved it to be old toss.
The best thing i thik he had done of recent was the Millar wolverine arc, although i only recall the first issue on that.
Now kick A** is an incredible read and better art than what he was putting out on Amazing Spidey which was really awful wish washy crap that i just cannot justify paying money for ( although im a retaile so thankfully dont have to).
Regardless of how good he ever was at any point in time, his style now with the big fat marker chunkyness is not even close to being good comic art.
I do however appreciate also that beauty is in the eye of teh beholder and we all are turned on by diffrent styles and one cannot sy he is not talented, just that he has setlled on a style that i personally find very displeasing indeed.

Its certainly comparitive. Make me choose between JRJR and say Tex and I'll pick JRJR every time. Still damned lucky he has his fathers coattails to ride on. Him and Andy Kubert. Sure there are others, just the first one I can think of.x-omatic wrote:I have to disagree here. I loved his work on Punisher War Zone and his run on Spider-man. Tex is an outstanding artist too, but chooses to do some strange stuff like draw Wolverine as 6 footer. DUH.

his Dare Devil - Man without Fear series was really good to. I think I like the "grittyness" of his style. I like his style much in the way I like Kirby. He has a unique style.Draco wrote:Thats fair enough and to be fair there were times i really enjoyed his work.x-omatic wrote:I have to disagree here. I kind of agree. His art is amazing in a realistic sense, but it doesn't feel "comic-booky" if that makes any sense. I don't know how his art commands the prices they get, especially with the vast amount of product! I don't see those prices holding up over time. Maybe they are making their money by selling a limited number of pieces a year, but they sure deny a lot of his fans from ever owning a piece.Dr. Solar wrote:I don't think many will agree with me...

He is really good but overhyped as he was the first person to bring that style to the mainstream.
Its almost like the comics world wont accept anyone else doing similar work as Alex Ross did it first and they are just copying him, but in reality its a style of painting and so therefore everyone who does pencils and inks are all copycats too.
I dont want to put the guy down personally as he really does some lovely bits, but he is held in way too high regard.
Amen

I agree. Look at Deodata's painted work on Innovation's Beauty & The Beast - totally blows Alex Ross out of the water (and pre-dates him too) in my opinion!Draco wrote:I totally agree dude.Dr. Solar wrote:I don't think many will agree with me...

Well, I may get a smack over this, but I think Steve Dillion is way hyped. All his characters all look the same, if its Jesse Custer or Constantine, it's just the same thing over and over. I think his style fits Vertigo books, but not mainstream comics. His run on Wolverine Origins, just made me want to cancel it.

you doth speakest the truth,
Although Dillon is really cool and all that, ye shis style is old and samey samey.
His ealry work on Judge Dredd was outstanding and we all copied his style for a few years, but his work now is indeed flat as are so many 20+ year vets.
I was smart enough to not try Wolverine origins and am sorry you had to find out the hard way.

The art was different and i liked it but more suited to an original graphic i think.maraxusofkeld wrote:I had delusions it would be somehow comparable to the original Origin. I just think that something good will happen as soon as I cancel it at my LCS. I did enjoy that Loeb run with Simone Bianchi on Wolverine, that I thought was decent.
