Does VEI still sell the X-O HC? I'm not sure exactly how it all works, but I thought that with printings like that you would be able to order more from the company once the initial ones sold. So, if someone was stopping the A&A HC then would they not try to stop any further sells of X-O and maybe even Harbinger?dave wrote:with absolutely ZERO knowledge of what is truly going on, i think that it is safe to say that they can't release it right now-dino said the book was done and ready to ship-so if they could-they would-they gain nothing, and lose plenty by not shipping it-which seems to indicate that some "outside force" is preventing them-which again i would hazard to guess is not their fault as dj just stated.
It just seems that if they were having copyright problems there would have been news somewhere.

I dunno about that - legal matters usually require complete silence until all matters are resolved. Look how long we knew next to nothing about the VEI v/s VIP struggle.etos45 wrote:It just seems that if they were having copyright problems there would have been news somewhere.

What we need is innovation and even revolution—but not so much in the form of marketing ploys and doohickeys. What is needed is bold creative vision, excellent stories, and brilliant storytelling, in a word, entertainment. -- Jim Shooter

I don't think I was really aware during most of the VIP/VEI problems, but even though little was know about the issue, it was known that there was an issue, wasn't there? Maybe I'm just shooting from the hip and I don't know what I'm talking about.slym2none wrote:I dunno about that - legal matters usually require complete silence until all matters are resolved. So, let's assume for a second that it's a copyright issue and now VEI isn't allowed to reprint any back issue with the GK3 in it... what's that going to mean for the HC? The company for that matter? If they've already got the books printed, that's got to be a pretty huge hit to the wallet to not be able to sell.

That would have been a major *SQUEE* up on VEI's part. I would hope that such issues had been sorted out before work even started on the HC. There are plenty of characters/books that don't have any involvement with the GK3, why not just go with those?etos45 wrote:I don't think I was really aware during most of the VIP/VEI problems, but even though little was know about the issue, it was known that there was an issue, wasn't there? So. If what we are speculating is true. (that VEI can not reprint any Valiant issues that have GK characters in them)
Unity and most, if not all, Pre-Unity can not be reprinted. Magnus is so intertwined in Rai, that Rai and Rai and the Future Force is off-limits.
If this is all true any issue with any GK character is off-limits to VEI.
If this is true then it forces VEI into recon. It also make reprinting old material tricky. What is worth reprinting is now off-limits. What is re printable is not worth reprinting.
$25 for a Ninjak HC? No thanks. Armorines? Geomancer? VH-2? Ummm....No thanks.

That maybe true since Dark Horse themselves have reprinted several of Marvel's old Star Wars, Conan: The Barbarian and The Savage Sword of Conan books in trade paper back. They even have reprinted a couple of the old Marvel single issues of Star Wars (minus the Marvel logo and banners of course) with some of the various Star Wars toylines.Dr. Solar wrote:It was an offhand remark by some Dark Horse higher-up at San Diego of this year. Newsarama released an article about it.slym2none wrote:This is only an educated guess, however. Somewhere along the lines here, I missed where it was initially said that DH was going to start printing new material using these characters.
Licensing can be funny stuff. IDW now has the reprint rights to the old Marvel GI Joe stuff as part of their recent license. The deal between Western Media and Dark Horse could have similar provisions.
From what I understand of dirivative work based on a licensed property, the original owner has to give permission to the person creating the dirivative work to create it. I would imagine this applies to reprint rights as well. Who knows?
If I were Dark Horse, and was planning to release new Magnus, Solar, and Turok material, I wouldn't want VEI printing material with those characters in it. Brand purity and all that.
Which also makes me wonder even if (and the keyword here is: IF) that is case: can Dark Horse reprint any of the Valiant published stories of Solar, Man of the Atom, Magnus: Robot Fighter and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter because of the VEI owned Valiant characters appearing in those titles.

If they end up folding the doors already for some reason, I would hope that they would "sell" or give the rights to do Quantum & Woody to Priest and Bright. It would work great as an Image title for the book itself and it would be far more lucrative for the creators. I wish they never would've gone with Acclaim for that title.
The return of Valiant to me at least looks more and more bleak each day.

They can only reprint the old GK/Whitman material. They can't print anything that Valiant put out.Cyberstrike wrote:Which also makes me wonder even if (and the keyword here is: IF) that is case: can Dark Horse reprint any of the Valiant published stories of Solar, Man of the Atom, Magnus: Robot Fighter and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter because of the VEI owned Valiant characters appearing in those titles.

Whoa! Let's not declare VEI's "folding the doors" just yet (and to give mad props to 400yrs, he did say "if").400yrs wrote:If they end up folding the doors already for some reason, I would hope that they would "sell" or give the rights to do Quantum & Woody to Priest and Bright. I would imagine that, if the GK3 have somehow become an issue, VEI is working to, minimally, get the A&A HC out. Ideally, there would be an arrangement for select reprints on an ongoing basis. The fact that we're not hearing from Dino makes me believe that talks are ongoing and, as with VIP, we will most likely never know who says what.
I'm okay with that. I prefer actions to words, anyway.

Of course not, but at some point, you have to cut your losses. They may be facing lawsuit after lawsuit here. I doubt that Dino's mom or whoever expected that was coming when they spent a mil on the properties. It looks doubtful that the Harby movie will be in process before the option on it expires.BloodOfHeroes wrote: Whoa! Yeah, but even "actions" taking place is speculation as well without even a "we're working on it" from dino. Hey, I'm all for VEI suceeding with this thing, but they may be best off seeing if they could just sell the properties to DH and cut their losses.BloodOfHeroes wrote:I'm okay with that. I don't think that there's basis for a battle here. It seems pretty cut and dry to me (which is a guarantee for exactly bupkis). As far as we know, VEI doesn't have legal rights to reprint the GK3.
Interstingly enough, there was no indication of (c) or (TM) for Solar listed in the Harbinger HC creduts, although the Man in the Red Pajamas showed up there.
I'm hoping that, IF something is going on related to the GK3, that they're in discussions, not in litigation.

It would also be in DH's benefit to advoid a legal battle as well.jedimarley wrote:IF there is another legal battle in the works. CAN VEI financially overcome it?BloodOfHeroes wrote:Whoa!
