Big Apple Report June 7-8, 2008
A friend asked me to help them out at this show...so I went. It was a DEAD show!..
But, on a positive side..
There were a few dealers showing off their Valiant stock. Very visible change from past shows. Some had mentioned to me, even middle run copies of everything were starting to sell for them.
One guy had a Valiant/Acclaim section..it was probably pecked at a bit, as I didn't find anything scarce. But the idea that it was on the top shelves and not on the bottom was a nice change.
Only found 1 copy of Harbinger: The Beginning today for $20.00..
It was gone on my next time around.
There were copies of Magnus 1 for $25.00, Rai 0 for $8.00..gone by shows end!..
Definitely Very Positive!

I can also chime in with the Capicon show I went to over this weekend here in Virginia. Although the dealers didn't bring much Valiants, there were literally tons of folks asking about them. While I was digging into dollar bins in each table, there would be a different person each time coming by asking whether the dealer had any Valiant Comics. Then I overheard another dealer talking with somebody saying that he's surprised that he's getting asked about Valiants quite frequently lately and that he will need to go dig out his old stock again. Times are definitely changing....

I was at that show too, but didn't get there until late (about 1:45 or so) so everyones stock was picked over.Escaflown4 wrote:I can also chime in with the Capicon show I went to over this weekend here in Virginia. There was a guy selling a Don Perlin signed Solar #1 for $15 that I almost picked up. One Vendor had a complete run of X-O Manowar V2 at $1 each. The only other Valiants I saw were commons.
What got me about the show was this. When I got there, there was a good 90 minutes of show left but many dealers were packing up to go home. Yes, the show had slowed down but why not stick it out an unload some books. I just didn't get it.

Yeah I was at the show when it opened and I can say either the high gas price or recession is rearing its ugly head as attendance was extremely low. There weren't much deals to be had. The dealer with the signed Valiant books is David, but his prices were a bit steep. Unfortunately he was the only dealer that had the pre-unity stuff. I ended up leaving the show around 12:30.tssgery wrote:I was at that show too, but didn't get there until late (about 1:45 or so) so everyones stock was picked over.Escaflown4 wrote:I can also chime in with the Capicon show I went to over this weekend here in Virginia. I ended up skipping the Big Apple Con because of the heat wave.
NYC streets are unpleasant enough when it hits mid-90's and above temps, which is okay when your destination warrants the trip in. However, stinky fanboys in cramped quarters, with the possibility that the AC may not be pumping, well....no thanks.

Do you know who sets up right as you walk in the door? It's a husband and wife team with $1 books, buy 10 get 1 free? I'd like to get in touch with them if possible.Escaflown4 wrote:Yeah I was at the show when it opened and I can say either the high gas price or recession is rearing its ugly head as attendance was extremely low. If I could get away with it, I'd require a smell test before people were allowed in a convention. Any whiff of anything unpleasant...."sorry, go home and bathe and put on freshly laundered clothes, then you can come back."mrwoogieman wrote:I ended up skipping the Big Apple Con because of the heat wave.

I know the couple you're talking about, but I don't know their names or their contact info. I guess one reason is besides their $1 bins, I tend to avoid all their other books as they seem to just make up prices out of thin air. $40 for Dawn #1, $20 for Dawn #4... these are just common books that came out during the 90's that can be found in other $1 bins. Don't get me wrong, but they are nice people. I just don't like their prices in the non $1 section.tssgery wrote:Do you know who sets up right as you walk in the door? I agree totally. The $5 and $10 and wall books are all priced a little... scattered. I did buy an item off their wall about 6 months ago because I talked him down to about half the price. Other than that I only buy the dollar books.Escaflown4 wrote:I know the couple you're talking about, but I don't know their names or their contact info. Man you guys got that right. It seems that every show I goto, there just has to be at least ONE guy that can send folks running the other direction. It's just Murphy's law. It's like at this Capicon I was digging through a dollar bin when some dude that came up next to me forced me to hold my breath instantaneously. This guy probably haven't showered in weeks. I had to do an immediate 180 and walked away as fast as I could.wallywest wrote:I feel youZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:If I could get away with it, I'd require a smell test before people were allowed in a convention. That last con I went to was packed, and just about everyone was out in force, if you know what I mean.

I have lost any desire to be cordial to these people anymore. I'm big enough and skilled enough to handle myself in fisticuffs against almost any fanboy except Byrneout, so I just don't care when I say "Damn, dude, TAKE A SHOWER!"Escaflown4 wrote:Man you guys got that right.
