I can't comment for London, but in the three cities (not towns, but cities) I have lived or worked in I have found some back issue selcetions, but nothing like the stories of boxes of stuff that I read about here.Daniel Jackson wrote:Not so good, eh?leonmallett wrote:Try living in the UK...Rufusharley wrote:Not badDarth Kramer wrote:Capital City Comics in Madison, WI has a great selection of quarter VALIANT books, and it's restocked rather frequently. Man , the comic stores here suck!

I have a rather disappointing story that rather fits with the current off-topicness.
We got a new phone book today. So, I cracked it open and was flipping through the yellow pages just seeing if there was anything worth seeing. There was not a "Comic Books" section, but there was one that was something along the lines of "Comic Books - Buying and Selling" and there was one listing - but it was not the one store that I've been going to for 15 years, the one store with back issues within 200 miles of home. And it was a mere mile and a half from my home. So I scurried out to find it, and it was nestled in a strip mall - Gryphon Games. Their hours did not list them as being open on Monday but the Open sign was lit up, so I went in. There was a sign in the front saying they were looking for Warhammer players, and that should have been the first sign. There were two fat guys sitting at a table playing Magic the Gathering and one (I assume the proprietor) asked if he could help. I told him I was looking for comics, and he directed me to a rack I had already walked by - and sure enough, there was a handful of comics sitting there without bags or boards. All Marvel/DC (probably 3 Marvels per DC) and all very recent, within the last 2 years. The proprietor said it was just not worth it to try to compete with Ed (the LCS proprietor). He's right. Big Apple is a great store. The help staff is friendly and they are really good with customer service. I just wish there was some competition. Maybe someone with a quarter bin - Ed played conservative (smart) during the early 90s boom and that's why he's the last and only game left in town.
Mainly I want another supply to go through. I've bought up pretty much everything he has that I need/want for my various collections - with one gleaming exception. He's got a copy of Rai #2, but he's asking $7.60 for it. I'll buy it one of these days. Really, the only time I buy back issues is when I develop a new interest and fill my runs from his stock.
I want to be able to profit off another man's hubris. I want a quarter bin!

my most recent buys from quarter bin are Daredevil 319 autographed and Deathmate Blue signed by ostrander and grau. plus armorines 11 and batman black and white 1,2 and 3. (i love the covers on these books. especially the BWS one. pretty) ninjak 2nd series 1-8, and 2nd x-0 series 1-5. bunch of x-factor early issues. some daredevils from the late 70s and doctor solar number 7 (not in great shape but still a quarter c'mon). he has savage dragon 1-30 in there. comtemplating going back to get them. i have like 1-6, would be worth it i think. oh and some kid and play and new kids on the block comics. (this just for fun)

They also once had a Predator vs. Magnus trade paperback, but I snagged that a couple years back. Myron, did you ever get anything any good from Capital?Darth Kramer wrote:Capital City Comics in Madison, WI has a great selection of quarter VALIANT books, and it's restocked rather frequently. Quarter Bin Raids
Well, it hasn't really been "quarter" as much as the 50 cent or dollar bin, but that is all they have in my area anymore. I recently picked up the first four issues of 2nd life of Dr. Mirage for about 2 bucks. I got MOST of the Unity issues for a dollar each at a used book store that sells comics. The bummer was I had to pay a full dollar for the free Unity prologue, but that is what I get for coming on board late. The Unity issues I did NOT get for cheap were Shadowman 3 & 4, Unity # 1 and X-O # 8. I also managed to snag a factory sealed Valiant Visions starter kit and issues 7-20 of Harbinger. I spent over 3 hours going through mounds of books and I might go back to make sure I didn't overlook anything. The raid was well worth it. The books are in good condition and worth at least what I paid for them, but the point is, I got them, I read them, I love them, and I am happy...partially for semi-snookering the guy at the bookstore.

Re: Quarter Bin Raids
For some odd reason, I've been picking up large batches of Unity #0 when I see them.xodacia81 wrote:Well, it hasn't really been "quarter" as much as the 50 cent or dollar bin, but that is all they have in my area anymore. Including the two reds, I've got 50 copies of Unity 0.

Most places in my area have cover price or more books too. Then they wonder why the books collect dust and they can't make any money.....Escaflown4 wrote:Sighs I miss the quater bins. Ever since I've relocated to northern Virginia, I have visited practically all of the LCS in my immediate area and only one store had like ONE box of books marked $1 each. Everything else was cover or higher.

I was out today and found a Vintage Magnus in a dollar bin-as well as buying # 1 of the regular series for 9 bucks-but I came across a treasure...an actual quarter bin...5 books for a dollar! I couldn't resist, so I loaded up on Bloodshots and Shadowmans, a few Rai & Future Force, Dr. Mirage...I'll make a list up soon, but I now have more doubles than I ever expected. I've been bit...must buy multiple...raise value...able to share with friends...hook others....read and enjoy books...I spent about 10 there(getting low on cash as it is end of month) and have a layaway due out after I get paid next. That layway is going to really put a dent in my collection.

in answer Bro...not valiant wise...one of the guys that runs Cap city used to have a buddy at valiant so he was always on to the "good stuff"(read Pre-unity). I'm very surprised and almost mistified(especially the harb 0 pink...there is no way they would have a pre unity issue in the quarter bin unless it was beat to death) that Darth found those things in their quarter bins...I've been through them a number of times and the only valiant I ever see is the usual quarter dreck.
I do pick up other things there though...I have pretty much completed runs of Badger, Grimjack and Nexus from the Cap City quarters plus they have a great selection of Bronze age stuff. They grade well, but do charge overstreet for that type of stuff...
they are also huge on TPB's and graphic novels. All in all it is a cool store and has been there for a LONG time and has a huge back issue selection...

I wear my badge of Noob with honor
In all seriousness, I'm truly enjoying this board, as I finally found a place where there are people with similiar interests as me, particularly as it pertains to Comic Books. As for 3k posts...dang it, that was my goal...3k by New Years day. I have to ask a question, though-what is the rarest VALIANT book anyone found in a dollar or under bin? I would have to say my best find iin ths would be a tossup between Harbinger # 7 or the Acclaim Harbinger special, unless anyone counts the reprint of Solar # 10 as rare.

Platinum Bloodshot would be amazing, but I have a pretty good one that I just a moment ago realized. I was going to sit down and read Unity-minus XO # 8, which I still need-when I noticed that Unity # 1 looked different. I took a closer look and realized it was a GOLD!
I had pulled it from the dollar bin. That now ranks up there with some of my other finds. I still think my best deal ever was talking this guy down from a coin once. He wanted 75 for it and I got him down to 37, which was just about what it was worth.
