Hey, I've got an extra one of those ads lying around somewhere, cleanly clipped just like that.... I can sell it to you and you put it back in....Daniel Jackson wrote:....Arrrgh! (Marvel once had a satire comic book titled that) At least the story s complete! Just a double-sided ad page cleanly clipped!
It must have been the ad for the family of Sea Monkeys or the X-ray glasses.

My biggest train-wreck story goes as follows. I was at a local comicon in Iowa about 15 years ago, and saw a copy of X-Men #16 (original pre-Uncanny series) being billed as "NM" on sale for $30. Being 14 at the time, I only had about $50 to spend, so I blew over half of my budget on this book, only to find that the original owner had drawn penises on EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER on the book, including the Sentinels and Master Mold himself. I complained to the seller, citing that he had deceived me in his advertising, and all he could say was buyer beware. My *worst* story ever.

Seeing as you were only 14, You should have kicked him in the shin and yelled "seller beware of ripped off customers" and ran.Shadowmatt wrote:My biggest train-wreck story goes as follows. Hey IMJohn...just to let you know that I'm a big IM fan also. I have a near complete TOS run minus a few, and with just a couple of the previously posted train wrecks. Check out Bob Layton's website for some GREAT IM stuff. There is also an Ironman Fanzine. Sorry to beat a dead horse if this is stuff you already know.---SteveIMJ wrote:I just wanted to let everyone know that this thread has affected me so much that I have 6 consecutive posts in a row (in the same thread).

It has the origin Whetspeak!
Alot of (Tales Of) Suspense!
I duke'em out with the Z-man!
It NEVER went Gay!
And a damaged CEAR thrown in for good measure!
What more could you ask for....except more!

Hold on now... isn't EVERYONE an Iron Man fan ?
I remember as a kid, I took my Micronauts (TM) figures and painted them the color of Iron Mans (red/yellow) armor. If you used your imagination and squinted your eyes, it passed for an Iron Man figure.
Layton's runs on this book were the best.
I here recently pickd up just about the whole run of Iron Man that Sean Chen worked on... they are GREAT. Not just the issues that Chen worked on but the whole run is what I picked up.
(hey, did I just type in Yoda-ese ?)

Since you guys were discussing Iron Man / Suspense --- many years ago I bought a surprisingly high grade copy of Suspense # 9, nice VF range, Iron Man prototype. Not long after owning it a piece of tape from the bag stuck to the cover ....
well, you can guess the rest
This taught me the hard way to remove tape BEFORE removing comics.
And Knightt, I agree with the Chen IM run. It was good reading, especially the Quesada written issues. Although the sentient armor thing reminded me of a certain title he worked on in his younger days

There are people on this board who would say that's too bad, it's your fault for taking the seller at his word.Shadowmatt wrote:My biggest train-wreck story goes as follows. No foolin'.
Isn't that MIND boggling?
It's a wonder you stayed with comics. Lots of people, when they're screwed over by greedy, scummy, unethical, grossly misrepresenting to the point of fraud, assewipe sellers just leave the hobby.
And then they wonder why they go out of business because no one will buy their crap.

Steve, no horse neccessary.... I think it's cool as hell that you are an IM fan, and that sounds like a great run! So.... uh, out of curiosity, what DO you think of that IM fanzine?Vault-Keeper wrote:Hey IMJohn...just to let you know that I'm a big IM fan also. The Busiek issues that Chen drew were some of the best IM comics in the series. They easily hold a candle to L&M's run on the book. Those of you who are collectors may like reading "The Stark Market" in the next Advanced Iron when it comes out in about month!hulk181man wrote:Since you guys were discussing Iron Man / Suspense --- many years ago I bought a surprisingly high grade copy of Suspense # 9, nice VF range, Iron Man prototype. So, I suppose, whet was just saying "The GRAY HAIR, the gray hair."

Some people spend their whole lives believing in fairy tales, usually because they don't want to give up the fabulous prizes.

What an A$shole...he should have his nuts cut off, fried up and served to him for breakfast. Taking advantage of someone like that, regardless of age is what gives people a bad taste about collecting in general. I hope his shop went bankrupt.Shadowmatt wrote:My biggest train-wreck story goes as follows. Luckily I realized that this retailer was an exception to most of the sellers I had dealt with at that point. But since then, I've asked if I can at least view the issue on all back issues more than 20 years old advertised as a VF or higher. When I get home from work tonight, I'll scan an image from this book, it's a doozy!
