I have never read any Valiant books. Where do I start?

Post by Big Red »

I grew up read comics but got away from them during my college years.
I got back into them around 1994.
Thus, I missed out on the peak Valiant years.
But I have been reading about how great the early years were.

I have been checking them out on ebay and several titles are available.

Where should I start?
X-O, Solar, and Bloodshot look interesting to me.
Was Shadowman or Dr. Mirage any good?

Which books were the best?
Thanks.
Favorite books: Black Hammer, Bloodshot, Divinity, Justice League Dark, Marvel Two-In-One, Thor.

I would recommend getting some of the trade paper backs if you don't really know where you want to start. You can pick most up off of ebay pretty reasonable.

hurray for trades. :)

early X-O and Rai were really good, and both trades are very easy to find (and cheap!) I'd grab those two...

The first 8 issues of Magnus are probably two of the best (or most memorable) stories for me... really wish those trades were easier to find, but the original issues aren't THAT expensive. Especially if you just want readers and don't mind having the coupons clipped

Shadowman is a great read. It starts out a little above average, and just gets better and better (with a few weak points around Birthquake) but overall stays strong to the end.

Just got and pickup Bloodshot #1 and check it out...Hell someone on hear probably has a set of Bloodshot 1-10 that you could pick up for next to nothing..Great read and it will be the first movie that DNV does with The Rock playing Bloodshot..Oh yeah it is going to be the heat...just kidding about the movie...but bloodshot is cool..dont bother with harbinger..it will cost too much to pick up and isnt that great...hell it isnt even as good as the most of the marvel "teen-teams" that it rips off...Magnus is cool...XO is fun.

Pick up the series you like and try getting the earliest issues you can first. Shadowman was VERY good. Dr. Mirage...is more of an acquired taste but atleast their aren't many issues to pick up of it. If you can find a "Valiant Reader" in the discount bins it should be very helpful since it contians information on all the series and characters that they published in their first three years.

The best way to start is by reading Magnus 1-4 and then the Solar: Alpha and omega tpb

Start with X-O 68. Then have it slabbed by the PGX. Sell it on eBay for mega millions.... j/k

Seriously, Magnus #12 is a great tribute to the Gold Key heritage of Valiant. and Solar #10 is a great tribute to Valiant.

Read: Magnus 1-8, Solar 0-10, Magnus 12, Harbinger 0-6, and Unity.

I also advise picking up tpb's if you don't have any idea where to start. Most of the books will lose something if you don't read a section of their story together. The trades will put the stories together for you and they are fairly cheap.

As for quality, you really couldn't go wrong with any pre-unity or unity valiant. Some are better than others , but their all good reads.

Sweet. It's better with the visuals that go with it, but it's cool that it's online :thumb:

Read Unity, but it would be cheaper to pick up the set through e-bay or ossibly a LCS with a dollar bin as the TPB's are a little expensive. Most comic dealers on e-bay will sell you a whole set for around $10,00 to $15.00. Archer & Armstrong #1-#12 is pretty fun. X-O, Shadowman, and the Eternal Warrior is good. Dawg is correct, Bloodshot is a well put together series, especially the earlier issues. Rai #0.
Welcome to wherever you are.
