Worst Valiant Artist?
We all know that art is the flip side of the story coin, so who do you think was the worst Valiant artist? VH-1 period, that is. And Deathmate doesn't count because Rob Liefeld worked for Image, not Valiant! It's not like there aren't a huge ammount of artists to choose from as Valiant had it's share of artistic talent go through the revolving door of talent that constantly changes in comic companies.

Edwards wasn't all that bad, I don't know where to go with this one, as it is hard for me to judge what art is bad. I think everyone has their own style and look and it should just be appreciated for what it is. I do know this, BWS, Bart Sears, and Joe Quesada were the best that Valiant had at their times. Bob Layton is pretty good too, but I didn't see too much stuff he did in Valiant other than covers, and it still was not up to the quality of his Iron Man stuff.

I actually liked Tommy Lee Edwards. Some of his pencils were a little messy back then, but his painted work has always been great. Dude's a talented artist though, and is still working in comics (Question mini a few months back).
I wouldn't call anyone a 'worst artist', but someone who's work I was never very fond of was Kevin Kobasic. I didn't like how he drew figures or faces, but I will say he did improve over time. Someone else who improved a lot was Luke Ross. His first work in X-O is pretty bad to me, but the stuff he does now is excellent.
MAC - far from the worst, you were always solid
xounitylord - I thought you were dead or something. guess you got 'better'

some guys are suited for sequential art and some aren't...tommy lee edwards might fall into that catagory.
it's hard for me to judge though since i haven't seen any of his newer work. he was an awesome fella both times i met him and his star wars pieces were absolutely beautiful.
i wouldn't put sears on the worst list either, he can draw...no doubt. it was always the page layouts that bugged me. his stuff was sometimes very, very hard to read...check out crossgen's "the path" for a recent example.
mac is, as usual, being way too hard on himself. while he wasn't dave lapham or bernard chang "back in the day", his art was solid and very john byrne. there are worse guys to pattern yourself after artistically then john byrne...mac's layouts were easy to read and follow...and newsflash dude, your stuff rocks...i paid $160 for your solar piece without blinking...and that was nearly $100 more then the rai piece you did for me...now that was a steal. oh and get this, i had to talk mac into charging more for the rai piece. he was gonna charge me $40 for it...i was like "dude, your stuff rocks...you're worth more then that...like double at least."
in my opinion the worst artist was george savaria...he may be a hell of a guy but his art on magnus was terrible. gonzalo mayo was bad too...out the 2 of them together and you had a trainwreck.
tom ryder couldn't save savaria's pencils...that, ladies and gents is bad.
tom ryder could ink me and make me look good...lol.
george has probably come a long way artistically since the 90's...but back then he was the worst.

Come on man, Bart wasn't too bad, a little on the overly huge sized, but not worse than Liefeld? That's a little hard to do. His hands and arms are at least into proportion of themselves, unlike Liefeld who seems to think hands only come in one size, what's an elbow, and my girls are more well endowed than any of your largest male strippers!

I never cared for Ernie Colon's Valiant work. When I was re-reading the Unity TBPs recently, the art on his Magnus issues was very jarring and did not flow at all with the other issues. He has an interesting style, it just didn't seem "Valiant" to me.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Do I gotta come thru this comp and kick someones arse!

DON'T NOBODY TALK NO JUNK 'BOUT NO BART! (he was my template when I was learning to draw before I got my on way)

now andy's work was alittle whack.

Too the above Bart Sears comments.....
If you read some of Sears' personal notes on the web, he stated that there was a period in his life where he just HATED to draw. He said he did it to pay the bills then, but it was something he could not stand. I think it was around the time he got divorced.
I think this is where you start to see his level of work really drop off in the later X-O issues. But I have to admit, X-O #14 & 15 were some of the best art Valiant saw.

yeah, anthony sucks.
yeah right. i dug MAC's stuff back then and do so even more now. Him putting himself in this catagory is high comedy.
And I liked tommy lee's stuff. I feel bad that so many others didn't. Geez, who knew?
I have one entry for you: Klayton Krain.
Nuff Said, true believer.
Oh yeah, I sucked too, no question. Look at Turok #24.

I remember btw one artist I had the distinct pleasure of talking to at San Diego pointing out that as his skills improved, he always felt ashamed of his older work. I guess oneself is the worst critic.

You publish it and call it Shadowman? lol
You hold it up and say "this justifies rebooting the VALIANT Universe!!" lol
Oh, speaking of really bad artists, there was this issue of VH 2 Magnus that had like 20 pencillers or something. That one really sucked, lol.

and lets stress that the story certainly wasn't the worst thing that I'd ever seen, just the art. Klayton had no business actually getting paid for that stuff.
Literally, when inking those pages, for a paycheck, I was thinking, if this is what sells, then I'm not sure I want to be in this business any more.
What else has Krain done??
