Are there any comics that have been published in the last 5 years, not just Valiant but in the whole industry, better than Warriors of the Plasm?

Is this for real Chiclo? If so, I’m hunting it down. I remember seeing these in bargain bins years ago, the weird font and cover didn’t appeal but if you give it your stamp of approval then I’ll check it out!

Please do. Would be interested in a new point of view. Maybe I need to give it another chance but the last time I read it I remember thinking it was a 6 out of 10 at best. In terms of better comics published in the last 5 years, I might have read a few thousand that are better. It's not bad its just a decidedly average book that was no where near good enough to launch a whole universe and is lucky to be able to hide its failure behind a lawsuit.

Plasm is a good book but not one of the greats of its era. My comment was more about current comics. Maybe it is a generational thing, I expect a certain style from comics that have fallen out of fashion within the medium.

I don't think storytelling is anything to do with it. It's the massive competition from other entertainment, its the changing face of paper vs digital, its huge rise in trades and piracy, its the ubiquitous nature of the same type of storytelling in movies, tv and video games etc.

You're close, there are similarities. Print was once a mass media, so comic books had to be made in a way that they would entertain and sell to a mass audience. Now the best writers and artists go into industries where they can actually make a living wage and the comic 'industry' is more like a club.

Dinesh manifested Valiant back from the grave through sheer willpower and work ethic. He did it like literally no one on the planet could. He did it incredibly well and humbly. He found a way to honor the past and pave a new future. One that no one could see. He did it for years. He birthed a new generation of creators. He expanded the Valiant universe in ideas and characters so greatly that its hard to remember just how so many of those characters and ideas weren't VH1. A feat I struggle to even think of a another example of in all of comics...but yeah, *SQUEE* that guy. He should have let Jim Shooter do it. This time Jim wouldn't have *SQUEE* it up right? 5th times the charm.

Cool story bro. Ah I see, you joined the board in 2016, so you weren't around for any of how things actually played out. So you just fill in what you don't know with a fantasy narrative that fits how you wish things had happened. Got it. Your responses all make a lot more sense now.

If you love Jim Shooter so much, give me $100 bucks to write you a comic, prove us all wrong, go get that genius on paper. I'm sure he'd do it for the money. I think Plasm 0 is the best single story, unfortunately it only came out in the card set binder. Still worth tracking down though.

While Defiant isn't my favorite Shooter-verse, there's a lot of good stuff in it and it was way ahead of its time. In an industry that's been built on copycats of 1 or 2 ideas, I definitely admire how original and audacious the plan for Defiant was.

I think you have me confused with someone else, I've criticized all of Shooter's writing post Unity 2000. I don't think it would have been the right move to have Shooter write all (or any) of VEI. But I also don't agree with making him the villain and trying to diminish what he accomplished (especially at Valiant).

I've tried to read a ton of VEI. Matt Kindt's decompressed, cryptic mystery box, style over substance just doesn't work for me. If it does for you, great, he (and Lemire, Venditti, etc.) have lots of books on the market to read.

The point of this discussion (to me) is to figure out why the fanbase disappeared. You say they just went to Facebook and discord. Ok but I don't totally buy that. I think there could be an opportunity to examine what didn't click for people about VEI in an effort for Valiant to be better in the future. That's all.

Yup. I still have a mangled copy somewhere that I cut out of Previews with a box cutter. Some years ago you could get Plasm 0 complete binder sets for quite cheap on ebay. Not sure what the prices are now.

plasm 9 + 10 written and w art by david lapham are some of the best comics ever created. ever. its a standalone story 80 pages of comic bliss.. its a stunning work of art. theres nothing like, and can never be another wop.

I think you mean 8 and 9, the 2 40 page Grimmax stories. Totally agree, those have always been 2 of my all-time favorite comics. Peak Lapham. I always enjoyed Stray Bullets, but it's too bad he never went back to doing Valiant style sci-fi stories.

I think you mean 8 and 9, the 2 40 page Grimmax stories. Totally agree, those have always been 2 of my all-time favorite comics. Peak Lapham. I always enjoyed Stray Bullets, but it's too bad he never went back to doing Valiant style sci-fi stories.

Latham’s did the art on Hero Trade for Bad Idea which is a sci fun story, really good too (with Matt Kindt on writing).

Best X-O storyline - Armor Hunters followed closely by VH1 X-O Manowar #0
Best Bloodshot run - Bloodshot Reborn
Best Harbinger run - Dysart by a mile which pains and brings me joy to say because Shooter/Lapham was perfection for me growing up
Best Shadowmn run - Shadowman #0 from VEI. I think the character is still waiting his best story but this was close
