Maybe the same thing can happen to that Flamingo cover by EL for Harbinger #7.

Not a key, AFAIK, but it is simply beautiful, and a must in every VEI collector's list. Everytime I come across it, I just look at it for more than what is normal.
If the movies pick up, and Charlene has a brand new fanbase, I can see this book being chased. Not that many, either way (I think) - this was one of those store incentive variants.

Beyond ridiculous... yes, it's hard to find, but you can probably commission a 24"×36" unique oil painting of that cover by the original artist for $12,500. There's no way the 2nd most expensive Spider-man comic, after Amazing Fantasy #15, should have #667 in the conversation. About 98% overpriced... $250 would make more sense.

This is easily the most dangerous "investment" in comics possible, with almost zero upside. What is the goal? Sell for $20,000? It's a worthless book in a variant wrapper. This type of book is everything wrong with current comics... times ten.

I'm sure hundreds of people spent a lot more than $12,500 on Enron stock before it imploded... and they all got what they paid for. Same opportunity here.

I agree. It's a ridiculous price. It got me to check modern sales of CGC 9.8 books by highest price though. I took off SS books as an option. There's an Iron Man 512 Venom variant in CGC 9.8 that sold for $2,000. I'll post a link to it in a bit.

There are several, actually. Spider-man #667 is the worst offender, but there are a dozen recent books over $1,000... generally 1:50 variants from non-#1 titles that no one really needed 50 copies. The biggest danger with these besides the price of entry, is that dozens or hundreds may be in a box somewhere because they were printed but not earned. It's unlikely that Marvel is only printing a couple hundred of anything.

The same message board cheerleaders generally pump these books nonstop, and the buying and selling is getting headlines for the activity of just a few people. Most of these were originally $50 or less, so they could literally lose 95% of their value and the hype-men would still profit.

Again, it's much ado about nothing... rare, sure, but there are thousands of books just as rare under $100. It's all hype... so, so dangerous.

It reminds me of the gold refractor baseball cards that were selling for $10,000 for retired players (Nolan Ryan) about 20 years ago. What exactly was the point, when the vintage rookie cards were cheaper?

Certainly much can be learned by studying the sports card market. Several years before CGC was launched I told a comic shop owner professionally graded comics were coming. It was an easy call, as at that time PSA was having huge success grading and encapsulating sports cards.

The Transformers: Generation 2 Halloween Preview Special. This is probably the hardest TF comic to find. It wasn't reprinted in the Titan TPBs and HC and to my knowledge never been reprinted by IDW either. It's kind of hard to know how rare it is because it was a free comic (in the vein of Unity #0) also because it was printed more like Comic Shop News is than a standard comic. I have a copy of it and I honestly don't know it's value because it can go anywhere $10-$100 and it doesn't pop up all that much.

I think the ms marvel 2 molina variant is scary before it was on CBCS?website I was trying to find one for 200. And passed up a9.6 for 400. As soon as the website posted it as rare the 9.6 jumped to 1100 and it sold within 2 days I think. Same with the venom variants as soon as they were posted as super rare they have went through the roof iron man 512 is just crazy and needless to say I'll never finish that set

Assume that's a typo for CBSI, which is like the new Wizard Top 10 (which on a quick check - Hawkeye 2 is a huge surprise to me).

yes it was CBSI i check that site alot but once you see comics show up on there expect prices to soar just got to wait it out and hope prices come back down to earth in the distant future

it happened on the finch wonder woman 38 as well i snagged 1 for like 150-160..2 months later it was near 300 ungraded i dont guess ill get to snag an extra copy of that 1
