The whole CREATE NEW line implies it's not a character already in the stable.

It looks like that's just what Bleeding Cool used for the article title. The article itself says
Bleeding Cool wrote:Valiant is planning a major new series in 2016 — or possibly more than one — to give their publishing line a preeminent female icon
I guess "Valiant to publish new series with female lead" isn't as good for click-bait.

My bet is on Livewire with GIN-GR as part of the supporting cast.

Luchadore mask guy is possibly a new look for Shadowman. There's an old teaser concept art image floating around of this design from back around 2012. I recently did a sketch cover commision on a Book Of Death #1 of that character...

Yes, and women are half the population. Taking everything in your post together, it seems you're saying that new characters should be men unless there's a specific reason for them not to be.

Or are you suggesting that all characters should be androgynous (i.e. not a certain gender)?

I sure hope so, as I took advantage of Ed's deal for bulk #1, and also pre-ordered a good quantity of the A cover of issue #4.

I'm not 100% sure what he's saying, but I would say the most important step in creating a cool new character is making sure the character is cool. If the character happens to be a latino woman - great. Should comic books be more diverse than they are - probably, but I feel it should be natural and not forced (whatever that really means). Hopefully VEI is successful with this move. They've created lots of great female characters - hopefully one can sell enough books to sustain an ongoing title.

Being a main Valiant character means usually means doing lot's of physical violence and straight up murdering people. What percentage of the US population are women in prison for violent crimes opposed to males? How many famous serial killers are out there who are also female?

As much as I'm looking forward to a Faith mini, this doesn't seem to qualify as new or on par with Wonder Woman.

The article itself seemed to imply it would be an existing character and not really a new one. I think the main point of the article was that they want the character to become the "preeminent female icon ... for the Valiant Universe". That doesn't mean the character would instantly be iconic outside of the Valiant Universe like Wonder Woman is. The other example given is Captain Marvel and she's not really iconic outside of the Marvel Universe. How could anyone just set out to create a character to do that?

To create a character that would be iconic to the world in general takes a lot of time. Wonder Woman is iconic because (on top of being a great character) she's been around for nearly 75 years, and has been featured prominently in other media. If VEI can turn Faith into a character that can support a solo book for 20 - 30 years then she would possibly be iconic too. In all honesty it would probably take more time, unless the movies can make her a household name.

I was trying to think what new female characters in recent history have been the most successful. I think Witchblade might be the best example, and she's nowhere near iconic.

I think this book could translate very well to TV. Imagine the Harbinger Movies, with a follow up TV series featuring Faith played by the same actress. That could help with the iconography of the character.

Um, based on Warren Simons recent Tweet; Dinesh's art collection; and the Bleeding Cool article; I think it will be a female cosmonaut from Divinity #3 who gained a different type of power than Divinity, and will play a significantly different role in the Valiant Universe.

It is 100% possible that space in the Valiant Universe is quite vast and with endless potential for powers unknown. She could return to earth a goddess similar to Wonder Woman, but with greater depth in character writing; or similar to Captain Marvel, but different in many ways and ideology.

With what they just laid down in Fall of Harbinger, it's gotta be Faith. She's literally called the most popular superhero on Earth.
