New Universe - Untold tales

Just came out in the last couple of weeks, so it shouldn't be hard to find at your LCS. Overall, it really wasn't a bad story, although I wasn't that fond of the art. It picks up the abandoned Gnome storyline and wraps it up.
That said, I found the Star Brand special extremely boring. The Mark Hazzard: Merc backup in Amazing Fantasy was pretty good, however (but only 8 pages).

Really, Star Brand wasn't my favorite. It occurs before Byrne takes over, but for the most part it's just a recap of everything that happened in the series up to that point.
Although I do like one joke - a traveler's talking to Ken Connell about parallel worlds (or whatever Marvel calls them) - and mentions how on Earth 616 if you stand under a flourescent light for too long you get powers.

I'm amazed they are going to do a Spitfire story of any kind because as a series it really sucked. I can understand giving almost any of the other series another shot as they weren't that bad and had something a modern writer could probably hang a story on. But Spitfire had nothing of worth that I can see.davidb wrote:Amazing Fantasy 18. 19's going to have a Spitfire backup, and New Avengers (either 16 or 17) has a Kickers, Inc. backup.
I might pick up that new Nightmask as I really liked the series when it came out. It was certainly my favourite New Universe title.

The two specials I picked up, Nightmask and Justice, were decent but not as good as the real New Universe comics back in the day. This is kind of disappointing for the swan song of the original New Universe.
The art was disappointing. The Nightmask issue looked like crap and the Justice issue had Manga wanna-be art under a crappy cover. Very inappropriate for a comics set in the "real world."
Nightmask had a decent fight with the Gnome and it was nice for them to pick something up directly from an old issue like that, but they reduced it to a mere slugfest in dreamland. All the really interesting dream imagery of the old series wasn't there nor was the exploring of the dreamer's psyche. And I really could've lived without the Gnome saying he wanted to put advertisements in people's dreams
The story in Justice was better but it still wasn't as good as David's better issues of the series.
I hope New Universal gets better treatment from Marvel.
