Re-Reading: X-O Manowar #42

Post by xoken »

I thought we could do a book a day (that way people can read one every day or catch up on weekends), talk about it on its own, in the context of whats next, in regards to what expectations it creates and vote on how good it is. I don't have to be the one that posts everyday. If I miss a day or if someone wants to take over please do

For voting think of your single favourite comic book (not just VALIANT) as the benchmark - thats a 10 - and grade according to that.

Make sure to mention what you like'd about the book, what you didn't, what you wish they would have done, your favourite panels, lines of dialogue, little bits of trivia etc.

I missed a few days recently, the re-reading thread just completly slipped my mind. I'll be back on track from now on.

Disclaimer: This crossover is a joke. The whole story is built on the idea that is the first time X-O and Jack have met. That's not true. Jack rode on X-O's back in Secret Weapons 2, as he directed Aric to the local hospital. This is completely ignored (retconed away I guess).

Plus there is no effort to coordinate the X-O and Shadowman issues in this x-over. They both have a general idea of each other's plot and that's it. Almost every character has a completely different hair-do and outfit between these two issue. The outcome of the X-O and Jack fight even have slightly different outcomes between the X-O and Shadowman issues. It's actually fun just to count all the inconsistancies between the two.

So I'm not judging this as a crossover or a continuity thing. I'm just judging it based on what happened in the confines of this issue.

...

That being said this issue is just awful. Both characters just are walking around snarling and throwing tantrums like big babies. I can't imagine any new reading coming out of this issue liking either Aric or Jack. The art ain't so hot since the fight scenes don't flow very well and I'm still trying to figure out where Aric's pupils go when he put on the armor now.

The story itself is a boring cliche. No bits of quirk or characterizaton to spice it up. Just teeth clenching, yelling dullness.

Bob Hall will get some amusing moments out of the x-over but none of them are here.

A 3.

At least they do mention that Aric and Ken listened to Jack play before. A strange story. Very many loose ends and seemingly no attempt to put it all together. Not good.

I love the cover to this book, but not much else about it. The story was weak and the way Aric is being drawn and written is appalling. It was yet another disappointment in a long line to come and to make matters worse it contains a Birthquake preview.

Eventually somewhere in the middle of the fight he does just that. Only apparently Shadowman has this "new ability" to raise some sort of shield that protected him from the blast.

you know...part of the problem I have with the re-reading project is, when I first read some of these issues, I promised myself that I would never subject myself to them again...

the last 20 issues of X-O
the last 20 issues of Magnus
the last 20 issues of Solar

among others...

Shadowman is able to protect himself with a shield, i think, because of the necromantic energy he has at this point......so at least they tried :P

#41 was where X-O Manowar jumped the shark.

#42 might as well have "Image Comics" on the label.

Yeah, that was a sad day for Valiant fans. They no longer care for continuity or great reading at this point, just one pointless battle after another with more and more lame cliché villains for Aric to fight.
