Spiderman: The Other
I got the last two issues of Amazing Spiderman to get the storyline's wrap up and to try out the plotline. I enjoyed JMS and Deodato as usual but the rest of the plotline I think can live with in just story recaps.
Let me get this straight: they did a 12 part story that ran through all three books just so they could give Peter a few new minor powers at the end and introduce a new villian for future plotlines?
Yes, their was big fight with Morlun that ended in Peter's death about mid-plotline followed by Peter "shedding" his body like a spider to be reborn but ultimately, at the end, it feels like they're just setting things up for future issues. We even end with Tony working on the new costume for a plotline that will lead into Civil War. Epics that set up for epics that set up for epics.
I just hope Marvel spelled backwards isn't DC.

i was pretty disappointed in the story overall. not very earth shattering, and kinda drawn out. i wish amazing was more like it was when JMS began his run with JRJ. that stuff was goldTodd Luck wrote:I got the last two issues of Amazing Spiderman to get the storyline's wrap up and to try out the plotline. What? Is the art too realistic for you?daydreamscomics wrote:

My enjoyment of JMS hasn't gone down a bit since he got on the title. Unfortunately part of what I love about Amazing is that it doesn't force me to buy any other Marvel titles to understand what's going on. I hope that doesn't change.
Though what did I do to deserve Ron Garney as the new ongoing artist? Have I *SQUEE* off God that much? Maybe he's gotten better since I last saw him but, if not, it really feels like a huge step down from Romita and Deodato.

I just finished reading "The Other" and I mostly enjoyed the story. It had my two favorite Spider-Man writers involved (JMS and Peter David) for one thing. I'm a big fan of JMS's writing and I like how his characters do grow and change as real people do. They have dark sides and hidden agendas and love and fear. They have depth to them.
The story had some powerful moments, especially MJ's reaction to Peter's death. Not wanting Peter's "official" cause of death to be an accident, but because of heroic actions so the world could get a glimpse of the Peter Parker she knows was the most moving part for me. (That's the kind of thing that JMS excells at - we as readers all know Peter's death isn't going to be permanent so the story isn't about the events but how the characters react and change in response to these events).
That being said, Peter Parker / Spider-Man is a cultural icon and you can't really make drastic changes on a permanent basis and it work. For instance, the black costume was cool, but it just wasn't that iconographic image of Spider-Man. They also tried a power & costume change with Superman and look how bad that was. So the changes to his powers and his costume seem to me to be leading to something else - a means to take us to the next big story rather than just a change for the sake of change. JMS is no Ron Marz.
I can accept a temporary change in costume, but that red and yellow outfit I've seen previews of is just hideous. That doesn't look like Spider-Man at all. It looks like something extremely lame from the Amalgam universe. I like that Spider-Man is not remaining stagnant under JMS and I have enough faith in him to reserve final judgement until I see what they do in the story, but I just can't picture Spider-Man in that costume for long.
As for the art in the "The Other" storyline, I think Pat Lee was the weakest. He has a place for his style, but it wasn't in this story. Chapter 8 (MK-SM #21) was the worst. MJ & Aunt May and the rest of the characters are trying to deal with Peter's death and the dialog was very emotional and heavy, yet we have this cartoony art with no emotion where the characters look like they could be discussing what to have for dinner. It was distracting and I had to make a conscious effort to ignore the art and focus on the story/script and let my imagination compensate for the bland art.
Overall, it was a pretty decent story, but the way it obviously leads into future events, it doesn't feel "over" so it's hard to look at it as a self-contained story arc.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

To add to the Pat Lee kick...
Chapter 7, MJ's arm is broken, and addressed in the art.
Chapter 8, MJ's arm is fine when drawn by Pat Lee.
The remaining artists follow suit so as to not make it obvious Pat Lee screwed up.
Oh, and Marvel spelled backwards doesn't equal DC. Marvel would need an upgrade first.

Such a shame Marvel's still got so much market share.Byrneout wrote:To add to the Pat Lee kick...

DC's been telling better stories for 20+ years.
Too bad sales don't reflect that.
