Re-Reading: X-O Manowar #9

Post by xoken »

I thought we could do a book a day (that way people can read one every day or catch up on weekends), talk about it on its own, in the context of whats next, in regards to what expectations it creates and vote on how good it is. I don't have to be the one that posts everyday. If I miss a day or if someone wants to take over please do

For voting think of your single favourite comic book (not just VALIANT) as the benchmark - thats a 10 - and grade according to that.

Make sure to mention what you like'd about the book, what you didn't, what you wish they would have done, your favourite panels, lines of dialogue, little bits of trivia etc.

With great power comes great problems. Or Be careful what you ask for. Aric got his dream and was hurt beyond what he could have imagined. A nice touch to show Aric hovering over Earth like Solar's been shown before. Could they have made this story longer? I guess not. When a hreo is too powerful it's not easy to make good stories. They got one great story out of this concept and I have to settle for that.

If you gave Aric hugs and kisses, would it be XOXO X-O?

The image is perfect. It comes just as Aric realises he is a god, which is after all the story of Solar

The story seemed rushed. I felt they could have another issue out of this story. Oh well....

Still good art and story.

Hey, where's the text? Is that the original art? :thumb: And the full page image you showed from XO 8? The art? Niiice.

Well, here's the text:
No wonder Deidre was afraid of me...of what I've become.

Dare I say it? In this world...In this time...I am a god.

Very good story, it was an interesting idea putting Aric back to his own time. We get a chance to see what a Barbarian could do with the power of the suit. Valiant at it's best once again.

Last issue they swiped EW #1. This issue they swipe Alpha and Omega. It's a pretty high-minded comic company that does literary allusions to itself

The swiping here is even heavier. Characters in this issue take on the roles of those in A & O. There's lots of swipes of panels and dialog (we could be here all day listing them!).

And yet, once again, this issue manages to create it's own unique and unforgetable story. It's just a joy seeing them come up with ways to parrallel A & O scenes with technology from 400 AD. But it's all there, from the science experiments on the hero, to the accidental disaster caused by an arrogent use of power that destroys the hero's "world", to "time travel".

The gauntlet they put Aric through at the end was just awesome. Seeing the X-O shrug off the best that age had to throw at it was bad a$$. And the ending "Nothing left for us except...the end." Classic.

It's very odd that this came out the month that they first released several half written comics by Shooter because he was kicked out. This issue practically reads like a homage to the man. Strange irony. :|

Anyway, it gets a 9.

Didn't we just read Alpha and Omega? But since you ask here's the things that jumped out at me...

On the "experimenting on Aric" page...

No exact swipes here but a very strong parallel to the experiments and the attitude of the hero we see in A & O ch 4 and 5. There's even the bit were the hero destroys "lab equipment" while showing off his powers, which *SQUEE* off the "scientist" (as Phil does in Ch 4)

On the page we first Diedre on...

From where she says "I love you, Aric" in the middle panel to where Aric says "Let me show you" in the next to last panel is exact dialog (substitute "Phil" for "Aric") from the scene were Phil wants to show Gayle unreality in A & O ch 8. The characters in these panels are in similar positions to the panels in that A & O scene, with the panel in the middle of the page being an exact swipe.

The last panel on the page is an exact swipe of a panel earlier in Ch 8 when Phil is flying Gayle over the city. Diedre's fear parallels Gayle's fear of heights that she mentions in that chapter.

On the page where Alaric and Diedre both reject Aric out of fear...

The last panels have similar movements to the last two panels of A & O ch. 9 with the last panel being a direct swipe. The dialog is also taken from those panels and is slightly reworked here.

On the page were Alaric and the Romans make an alliance against Aric...

The last panel on the page where Alaric says "Whatever it takes" is a swipe from the last panel of Ch. 7 were Dobson tells Phil "Whoever it takes" (referring to who'll stop Phil).

On the page were Aric rescues Diedre...

The dialog between Aric and Diedre is taken from the scene in Ch 10 were Phil and Gayle are finally reunited.

....

And ofcourse it's easy to see the parallels...Alaric=Dobson, Aric=Phil, Diedre=Gail. The traps at the end of both stories parallel each other. Aric zapping the column and bringing down the temple is his "black hole." He even finds a way to "time travel" by burying himself for 2000 years.
