Valiant History
Just saw the thread on magazines with art or articles on Valiant. I recently picked up Overstreet's CBM #2 which was on that list. It had a very interesting article, The Origin of Magnus Robot Fighter by Tony Starks.
It had pics of a few Gold Key issue covers and Valiant's Magnus #1. The article was basically a look at key issues as they relate to the Valiant Universe, 1st appearances of characters, themes, etc. Issue #7 teams Xyrkol with the robot planet Malev-6, the first mention of the Gophs, 1st M'ree, and first mention of Leeja's psychic abilities. But especially cool is issue #18 which reveals that 1-A had tried to create superhumans capable of smashing robots with a protoplasm altering machine, but they were all driven insane then returned to nomalcy. But in the Valiant Universe they are discovered hidden away and are still insane (#13,14). Issue #18 also has a plot where some North Am robot makers accuse Magnus of being a non-human alien because there is no record of Magnus' birth on earth or any planet known to earth - and no human could destroy robots with their bare hands. But Jim Shooter wove that into the Unity storyline with the Harbinger Torque being Magnus' father and Solar taking Magnus (as a baby) to earth from the Lost Land after Unity. That's some amazing plotting!! No wonder Valiant seemed to lose it's way after Shooter left.
Anyway, now I have a new goal - find those two issues because they are such an important historical part of the first Valiant character and the best crossover ever!
