Some art prices I came across today

Just a quote from an eMail I received today.

"850 for the shadowman cover

and 1,250 for the Magnus cover

thanks
xxxxxxx"

Nothing against business people wanting to make a buck, but come on.

There does not appear to be any signs of the prices slowing down soon either.

It's getting harder and harder to find deals anymore. Those days of finding Calafiore pages at 10 dollars each :D are long gone. They may never happen again.

oh well pick and choose now. :thumb: Would love to know what covers you picked up though.

Joey,

I have so much respect for you; I really do.

I'm trying to decide weather or not to pick them up (one, both, or neither), so when I make that decision, I'll share the specifics on anything I leave behind.

Fair enough Will! Just don't think that some prices are too high. They may look high, but it's all supply & demand, and there's only 1 piece of original art. I see some Valiant covers out there right now $500-$600 each, but to me,those certain covers are too much. It could be a deal later on down the line. But they're not from an area of cover art I am mainly looking for. I was just curious as to what some people were asking for their stuff,as we never see much of it turn up. Thanks! Joey

I know that you, me, and a handful of others are curious--REALLY curious--about this market right now. That's why I try to post interesting prices and interesting pieces now and then, even if I'm somewhat cryptic.

Honestly, competing with you guys (Dan, Dino, the Big J, etc) is a ROUGH as it is FUN. I'll do better when I'm out of school...

I had this thought that it would be fun to have a points system for art like there is for the comics inventories, just to see who has what and make a game out of it. Just a thought; it would be fun.

Cheers,
W.

While you're thinking, do you mind saying if we're talking pre-unity (in which case it seems like fair prices) or not?

Sharing is what's important, and anything fun that can help could be worth a try. No new weekly theme posted yet btw. If it is to be like the points system, then we need a price guide to start with, which is not easy. Maybe something like the rescue effort can be done. It would be nice to see which issues we here on the board together have all the art for.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but if it were a pre-Unity for $1250, I would be posting the jpeg link and not the price.

(Having said that, it's a beautiful BEAUTIFUL piece.)

I think you're absolutely right; the fun is in the sharing. I was just thinking something simple point system like:

1 point for VH2+ page art
2 points for VH2+ complete splash-page art
3 points for VH1 page art
4 points for VH1 complete splash-page art
5 points for VH2+ cover art
6 points for VH1 cover art
7 points for VH1 pre-Unity page art
8 points for VH1 pre-Unity complete splash-page art
9 points for VH1 pre-Unity cover art

Which is why I don't bother with the stuff, unless it's stupid cheap (less than $100 for superstar pages.)

The market's too weird, there are farrrr too many people wanting to pay crazy money for art, ANY art, and all it gives you are bragging rights, and a neat picture on the wall.

I mean, come on....the guy at WWLA I talked to wanted $4000....FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS...for the cover of Secret Wars #9.

I wouldn't pay $4000 for the cover of Amazing Spiderman #300, much less Secret Wars #9!

But, if that's what others want to pay, great. Seems a VERY odd way to invest...how can you establish a legit market for unique items? It becomes a game based on character appearance, prominence, and artist name. But where would you establish the 'value' for something like Amazing Spiderman #308 cover? And how would you walk away feeling you paid a fair price?

Sorry, too many variables dealing with unique items, and since it would be, for all intents and purposes, impossible to assemble a complete 'set' of anything but the most limited of limited series, it's a journey doomed to failure and frustration for ANY type of completist.

But hey...you all who love it...more power to ya! I'll just keep buying more copies of Harby #1. :)

Could work after some tweaking. Color art must be included as well.

Sounds fun!

Along with points for various colors, there needs to be points established for model sheets, ad art, unpublished art, & convention sketches.---Steve

I guess the Beauty of collecting art (as well as its value) is in the eye of the beholder!

Knightt_333 wrote:But *SKREE*, even if I DID go after it hog wild, I would SURELY not pay ridiculous prices for it.

What wouldja rather have... a PAGE for $500 or BOOKS for $500.

Just a matter of opinion, current economic state and desire.
It would depend on the $500 worth of books & the piece of art.

It's like the trick question of "What weighs more...a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?" Sure, they both weigh the same, just as the books vs. the artwork both cost the same. But it's in the substance of each as to where the better value lies. I could give examples, but I'm sure you get the idea...:)---Steve

It looks good, with a nice point spread. :thumb:

I don't mean to make it overly complex, but what about card art?

What about unpublished stuff like model sheets, covers, & the Harbinger Files Cards?

I think ad art, promo art, & convention sketches also need to be included.

What does anyone else think about these additional catagories?---Steve

I just want to keep it simple. The problem is that there's always more. There is a lot of other cool stuff out there, but--like the Vc.c comic book point system--I think we should use published comic book material. More isn't always better, sometimes it's just more.

Then I guess I'll have to figure out my own point system for the stuff you don't want to include. Over 20 pieces in my collection are unpublished Harbinger Files card colors or model sheets, which I value more than some of the published stuff.---Steve
