I think that was from before DMG purchased VALIANT, from when Dinesh was still in charge.

I think I recall reading that it was indeed intended to be an event with the Gold Key characters.

MotA, I feel pretty sure it was a last-ditch effort by DMG to drum up enthusiasm shortly before Alien. So many loose ends flying, I don't blame anyone for getting confused (and that includes forgiving myself! Haha!)
