Starting a new project - need input

Post by cjv »

I am thinking about starting a new tracking project, since I posted before and no one seems to have been doing anything like thist.

I am thinking about doing the following two things

1) Starting a "representative price tracker" - simply a graph showing how the price of 5 to 10 "representative Valiant comics" has been, and is, changing (using Greg's price guide)

2) Starting a "movement tracker" - simply a continuing graph showing the movement (in sales, from Ebay listings - again, using gregs price guide for the number of sales) has been, and is, changing.

Would there be any interest in this? Or if I do it, will I be the only one looking at it?

If I do this, I need some input from you folks.

1) For the price tracker, I would need to figure out what 5 to 10 issues to use. I would probably prefer closer to 5 issues rather than 10. But if you all could suggest issues that you think might be representative of the Valiant prices, that would be great. I suspect that extremely rare (VVSS, gold issues) might not be that good, because those prices might go really far up, and likewise issues that can easily be found for $2 or less (like the mid Valiant issues) might also not be good. I was thinking of something like Solar 10 (1st print), Magnus 1, Harbinger 1, maybe some others. If you could post a list of the issues you think would be best, I will take the 5 or 6 that get the most votes. (Feel free to post up to 10 issues)

2) For the movement tracker, I need the same type of thing, but I need it for titles, not just issues. So, for example, I would track all the sales of any Magnus books, or Turok, or whatever. This would include VVSS, gold, promos, etc. Again, if you could just list maybe the 7 or 8 titles you think should be included, that would be great.

The idea is to get some sort of general trend tracker - not just spikes for in demand comics, or hot issues and titles. I have asked Greg if he has archives of the old price guides, so I may be able to show it retroactively.

I would be doing this by hand (not any sort of computer program to get the info I want - not a computer programmer!).

If you think this would not be a good idea, that's fine. I am just sort of curious as to what it might show.

Sounds interesting to me. Here is my list of issues to track and also titles as a whole. I am of course biased since I starting collecting the original Pre-Unity Valiants so I feel like the longer runs offer a better guage for the second part of your potential tracking project, but the data would also offer the most value for Valiant collectors.

Key Issues:

Harbingers #1
Magnus #1
Magnus #12
Rai #3
Rai #4
Solar #10 First Print
X-O Manowar

As for the Titles to track:
Solar
Magnus
Harbinger
Rai
X-O Manowar
Shadowman
Eternal Warrior

There are certainly some more valuable comics like the Gold and Platinum Edition ans also the VVSS as you pointed out, but I feel like prices are all over the place for those issues and sales are fewer which means that the tracking might become long and drawn out with large fluctuations after each sale.

i agree with the previously stated choices.

i would like to add magnus 0 in there though

and for a "rare" book, what about the hardcover?

there are only 2,000 printed, but it seems like there are always a few up on e-bay.

as far as vvss goes-maybe just pick one of the more "common" books-like the rai 9 or magnus 25.

harbinger pink might be good too-hey why not both reds while you're at it...yer getting closer to ten!

I was suggesting NOT including any really rare book, or a VVSS, because the prices vary so much. Collectible books, like the pre-Unity's are okay, but anything that was designed to be collectible (like a variant) I would think would not accurately reflect the demand for Valiant comics.

IMHO.

I kinda of like the idea of including the X-O Manowar #15 Pink, I was debating adding it to my list and yes it is a variant so it would be up to you, but that one has always seemed pretty popular to me. :P

I didn't really get as much input as I would have wanted, but I will try to do this anyway.

I have decided to make 2 different price graphs - one that simply represents "difficult to find representative issues", and one that represents premium issues (send-aways, golds, alternate, etc).

The repersentative issues will be

1) Solar 10
2) Harbinger 1
3) XO 1
4) Magnus 12
5) Rai 3
6) Magnus 1

Premium issues
1) Harbinger 0 send away
2) Magnus 0 send away
3) Eternal Warrior Gold embossed
4) Unity 0 red
5) Magnus 21 Gold
6) Bloodshot 6 VVSS

The titles that I will track the sales of (all sales of ANY type of issue in these titles)
1) Magnus
2) Solar
3) Harbinger
4) Shadowman
5) Rai
6) XO

Hopefully using these, we can get some general idea about trends. Please feel free to suggest different titles once the graphs are up.

Wish me luck. I will post a new thread when I have some graphs done.

Chris
