Zelda sketches fetch $9K at Heritage

I was pretty surprised by this auction. 3 pencil sketches for a Valiant Nintendo book sold for $9K with commission. One is a nice splash page, but still, higher than I thought it would go for.

I have only one Nintendo page (Super Mario), and now think it's worth more than I thought!

Understatement of the year. Though I seem to remember other Nintendo items going high. Maybe that's a hot market now? How about the artist? I did find another listing on the web for art of his that had gone rather high.

I would buy anything about these characters, sadly.

Nephew of Norman Rockwell. Too bad he didn't do more pre-Unity work, maybe they couldn't afford him.

For the fun of it, I used this subject to test Google's AI.

Bard wrote:Yes, Nintendo related original comic art is getting more expensive. This is due to a number of factors, including the increasing popularity of Nintendo games and characters, the limited availability of original comic art, and the growing interest in investing in collectibles.

In recent years, there has been a surge in the popularity of Nintendo games and characters. This is due in part to the success of the Nintendo Switch console, which has sold over 100 million units worldwide. The popularity of Nintendo games has also been driven by the release of critically acclaimed titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey.

The limited availability of original Nintendo comic art is also contributing to the rising prices. There were only a small number of Nintendo comics published, and many of these are now considered to be rare and valuable. As a result, there is a high demand for original Nintendo comic art from collectors.

Finally, the growing interest in investing in collectibles is also driving up the prices of Nintendo comic art. Investors are increasingly looking for alternative assets that can appreciate in value over time. Original comic art is seen as a good investment because it is a tangible asset that is not subject to the same volatility as stocks or bonds.

As a result of these factors, the prices of Nintendo related original comic art have been steadily increasing in recent years. A good example of this is the cover art for the first issue of the Nintendo Comics System, which sold for $10,000 in 2017. In 2022, the same piece of art sold for over $20,000.

If you are considering investing in Nintendo related original comic art, it is important to do your research and purchase from a reputable dealer. Original comic art can be a valuable investment, but it is also a risky one. The prices of comic art can fluctuate wildly, and there is no guarantee that you will make a profit.

Here are some tips for investing in Nintendo related original comic art:

Do your research and only purchase from a reputable dealer.
Buy art that is in good condition and has a high degree of rarity.
Consider the investment potential of the art and make sure you are comfortable with the risks involved.
Be patient and don't expect to make a quick profit. The prices of comic art can take time to appreciate.

I think that's part of it too. Nintendo characters have been continuously popular for generations, the Valiant comics are another collectible part of the 80s-90s ephemera.
