Re: Kindt - 5 Developments That Redefine X-O
I know Dino's previously stated (right here on the board) with confidence that this new series is loyal to the events of the previous series, but with the view of the game I've got from here I still can't say that I'm totally confident in that claim myself, particularly having just read this article.
I dunno. I thought Venditti's overall setup of Aric and the Manowar armour was great, but I'm currently finding it very difficult to anticipate Kindt's work on it with anything other than cautious trepidation
Still, I look forward to forming a more educated opinion on the story once it's had a chance to play out for a while.
The fifth-century mind that has been brought up to speed to an adequate enough degree that it allows sensible, rational decisions to be made in the 20th century, more often than not?Quote: A lot of the friction in the series will be from Aric’s fifth-century mind and intelligence butting up against Shanhara...

The previous series has been off the shelves for a few months and there's [how much?!] backstory to cover here? Aric's gone from the end of the first series into suddenly farming on an alien planet? How much time is supposed to have passed, and how does that align with the rest of the VU? Are we going to have characters running around for the next two real-life years referring to Aric as being off on another planet somewhere just to make this line up in continuity? Is this story set in a future timeline?Quote: The last we saw, Aric was on Earth and happily married. But the new debut issue has him on an alien planet, farming and alone. So there’s a lot of backstory and forward progress we’ll be tracking over the next couple of years.

I dunno. I thought Venditti's overall setup of Aric and the Manowar armour was great, but I'm currently finding it very difficult to anticipate Kindt's work on it with anything other than cautious trepidation

And to add to that, on a more basic level: As a fan of the XO 'status quo' I'm not sure that I want XO 'redefined', whatever that means. The character arguably had years of play left in it before it needed to be 'redefined'.
What does 'redefined' even mean in relation to this character and ongoing plot?

Kindt can be a little hit and miss, for example Rai, Divinity and some of his Ninjak work has been great, but some stuff eg Unity and the last 2 Ninjak arcs a little 'meh'. That said, for some inexplicable reason I think his XO work will be top class and I'm feeling very confident the upcoming XO series will be a fresh direction whilst building upon what VDitti brought to the character.
And the art work looks immense!

My own thoughts:
A) I trust Valiant.
B) I've been hoping for a while that they would build the universe outward and go cosmic. It sounds like they're doing a lot of world building here.
C) It looks a lot like Heavy Metal, and I love me some Heavy Metal.

I am excited as hell about this series. I love how Valiant stops a series and then starts a new one when they are ready not rushing books out just to keep a book going... The break between 1-50 and this new series is going to make the artwork and story amazing as hell for sure!
And even if it sucks, there will be some people out there with really cool metal covers lol.
