Facebook launched February 4, 2004, according to Wikipedia.
That same day, this message board started.

Facebook was exclusive to Harvard students for a while, and since we had 37 members on the very first day (because it was a relaunch of an earlier Valiant fan board that lost its server), there's a chance that this message board was a bigger social media platform than Facebook at least on that first day.

Sure, they got a little bigger than us... but at least your grandmother isn't a member here.

Back in the day, I belonged and was very active in a RPG community, Tower of the Sun.
One day, one of the guys tells us that we should all register in this Facebook thing, because it was awesome (?!). And we could see where each one of us came from (we were a truly "very international" community) in a map, or somnething.

I've been a member since 2007, and it's mindblowing to think how far this *SQUEE* has gone.

Quite honestly, how Facebook (and Google) had gotten bigger and bigger--leaving every competitor behind--in no time...fascinating!

I was working for a multimedia company in Vietnam at the time. We were running a similar social networking service (as well as a Hot or Not site) and despite an official ban, Facebook ultimately grew much larger than our service (which doesn't exist anymore). Of course, the ban could be bypassed easily and, I believe, later on the official ban was just turned into a "you are not allowed to post anything anti-government" law.
