Looking for a Pre-Unity set up to Rai #0
Considering looking for a Pre-Unity set up to Rai #0. I plan to give it to Jim Shooter for his contributions and so he has one. Raw books- no slabs... VF-NM... condition does not really matter. It should fit in a short box and it's a gift for Jim Shooter.
How possible is this and what's bottom dollar on the set? Can anyone handle this?

Re: Looking for a Pre-Unity set up to Rai #0
Probably $4-600 range is usual.
Variants or not? Jim apparently never read harbinger 0, but it is considered preunity by nearly everyone.
What is the definitive list?
Magnus 0 retail? W card? - Magnus 14?
Harbinger 0 blue? Pink? 1 to 7?
Solar 1-11? Second print on 10?
Archer and armstrong 0 regular? Gold?
Rai 1-5
X-O 1-6
Shadowman 1-3?
The gold and pink add significant cost. Are you sure Jim doesn't have them and would want them?

I want reading copies. No golds or rare books, no coupons. VF or F is fine. Something he can pull out and re-read and have... I know he does not have such a set.

If you come up short, I may be able to pitch in.Knob Row wrote:I am asking Greg if he can put it together for me in exchange for cool stuff.
I'd also ask the big time slabbers here on the board, they're bound to have bunches that didn't pass the screen.
Also, maybe put Jim's name in the thread title. That might help attract attention to a good cause.

I'm sure I could put together a reading copy set if needed.

I can definitely contribute certain issues if you want to take up a community collection I'd be happy to donate some books if you go that route.

Re: Looking for a Pre-Unity set up to Rai #0
Just tell JS to sell those unopened cases of Harbinger 1 he has lying around.
Seriously, if you really wanted to do this cheaply you could use the old Valiant TPBs to cover many of the books. There are a number pre-unity books that were not reprinted in this manner, but most of those are not expensive.
If you really wanted a reading set of originals, unfortunately I just have my own personal reading set, which would be hard for me to part with. Of course I have a smattering of non high-grade excess pre-unity, but not a complete set.

I want the books to each have a label with the sequence they came out in, not by title, so TPBs are out.

Re: Looking for a Pre-Unity set up to Rai #0
We need to do this in order.
#1- I need a list of all books up to Rai #0.
#2- I will contact each of you in order to donate books.
#3- I will compensate you with a special thing I am working on that's $10 per unit, limited to 100 and is signed 3X Shooter.
#4 You figure out what I owe you and you get paid in $10 increments of this item.
#5 So sets 1-3 go the biggest contributors.
So someone post the list then we can move forward.
This is an excellent thing to do for Shooter being his 50th year in comics and all... let's give him every VALIANT he made as a gift.

Greg- Do you endorse this project? And knowing what the "item" is, do you think it's a good investment? It's all for the greater good and done by us VALIANT fans.
I would also like to present Shooter with some sort of glass plaque or paperweight for 50 years of service to comics by the VALIANT fans.
Anyone with ideas should browse this and LMK what you think:
https://www.crownawards.com/StoreFront/ ... stals.prod" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I am looking for people to donate PayPal bucks for me to afford to make one for him, I am also looking for graphic designers to make the plaque... it's be probably a glass etched paperweight... check it out This will be an excellent thing for Shooter.
All monies/books/donations will be compensated for with this new project... I am looking for five donors of $10 each for a set. My PayPal is mattpetrilak@yahoo.com Give away, the more I get, the better the reward for JS.

That a nice idea for the plaque, I'll send you some $ after work for it.
Not sure on what I have for pre-unity kicking around. Most books are in storage at a friends, but I'll see what I can dig up over the weekend and message you back.

Re: Questions, I think the ones posted cover what I would want to know, I have read several other interviews with him (I think one by you?).
Maybe ask if he would ever write a book about his experiences with Dc, Marvel, Valiant, Defiant, Broadway etc, kinda memoirs. I have read a few by others and I would buy one of his

Where are we going and why am I in this hand-basket?

Re: Looking for a Pre-Unity set up to Rai #0
INTRO QUESTIONS
What are you up to these days?
How much cash did you have to start VALIANT? What was that first week like?
Talk about "I wish it would stop." in Solar, and to a degree, Unity 2000.
Talk about your idea of a story with the good guys losing.
At this point in his career, are you more proud of your time spent at Marvel or the creation of Valiant?
What accomplishment are you most proud of with your time at Valiant? Least proud?
What was your favorite character that you created?
How is Paul Creddick doing these days?
OTHER SHOOTER WORKS
What is your connection with the Gold Key's 3 and why do you always seem to be involved with their many incarnations?
Who owns the rights to Broadway comics and Defiant comics? What was the premise of Schism crossover going to be?
What was the creative genesis for the Warriors of Plasm concept? Were you influenced by a movie or book you'd read? (Or wrote?)
VEI QUESTIONS
Please elaborate on your brief time with VEI.
Any chance you and Dinesh and company will ever meet and bury the bad blood?
What does VEI need to do differently (if anything) to take it to the next level in closing the gap on the big 2?
In hindsight, do you wish you were still involved with VEI?
Would you consider a cameo in one of the upcoming movies?
COMIC BOOK QUESTIONS
Can comics survive today without cross promotion (ie movies, television); what will the market look like in ten or twenty years?
Are the marketing tools of the 90's (ie. Zero issues; incentive covers; variant covers; mail aways etc) a positive/neutral/negative thing to the comic industry today? (Overused, underused,)
What would it take for you to launch a brand new universe in today's comic book market?
How would you propose entering the market Today with a new line; what differences Today versus entering the comic market of the 90's via Broadway, Defiant and Valiant?
Comics are better known now, and in current culture with films and TV. But this is not reflected in sales. High cover prices, decompression of story telling within such a small marketplace ~ what would you do to bring in more readers?
END QUESTIONS
What was your most rewarding job?
If you had it to do again, what would you do differently?

Re: Looking for a Pre-Unity set up to Rai #0
I think my list covers it unless you count unity and some early issues. I believe rai0 shipped the same time as ew 4 which is 2 issues after unity.
There was a website that had all of shooters involved issues which included solar 14 and 15 i believe though i know he doesnt get credit on cgc labels for those.

Here's a link of Shooter's work http://www.shooterswork.com/valiant/checklist.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Rai #0 was published in Nov 1992. However, there are works after that month that Shooter worked on - i.e. Magnus 19-20, Predator vs Magnus 2. Not sure if you want to include those. I will put this in list format with months so it's easier for you to sort.

Re: Looking for a Pre-Unity set up to Rai #0
This was done more or less manually so if you guys can please check . . . I started with the table from http://www.shooterswork.com/valiant/checklist.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and put it in a list format. For each month, it's just alphabetic order by title EXCEPT for the Unity comics which are arranged in the chapter order. I noted the Vintage Magnus issues as optional, not sure if you plan on including them. As mentioned earlier, Rai 0 was released in Nov 1992 and I am not sure which comics from Nov 1992 you want to include. Also some comics were published after Nov 1992 but Shooter worked on them so I am not sure if you are including those.
