Female Character Led Books?

Post by usuallymatt »

I asked this on the Valiant subreddit and thought I'd see what you guys thought. Is it just me or does anyone think it's a shame there aren't 2 or 3 female character books? I've been less interested with Marvel these days and aside from Batman I've never liked DC. It's been fun catching up on this fresh young universe but I really think a couple female titles would help make it even better. All the current series have some very strong female characters such as Kris, Faith, Livewire, Neela. Which would be your fav to go solo in their own book.

Yeah ... Would love to see some more female centric series

Livewire series should definitely be on the top of the to-do list.
Since she is already central in Unity in the present day - I would explore what happens to her in the future - can her consciousness be found in the 4001 Livewire tech in Japan? :hm:

4001 has the female Geomancer + Lula Lee + her female companion - maybe there is a mini/one shot potential there?

How about a female assassins team led by Roku and Mary-Maria? :hm:

Faith mini-series would be fun. But I look forward to her again as part of a team Harbinger title

Neela/Evil Neela is one of my favorite new characters - I could definitely see an Event crossover in the future with Evil Neela as the central baddie.

I don't think I've come across Punk Mambo in my reading yet. I've read Archer and Armstrong, half of Bloodshot, Harbinger, Harbinger Wars, The Valiant, Divinity, Rai, Ninjak, Ivar and Bloodshot Reborn. I'm up to issue11 of XO.

Shadowman has Punk Mambo and Doctor Mirage. The former was given an one-shot (similar to Faith), and the latter was given a five-issue mini series The Death-Defying Doctor Mirage, which are supposed to be followed up with The Second Life of Doctor Mirage.

We've seen Roku featured prominently in that Book of Death image of the final confrontation. That makes me think there are bigger plans for her.

I think there are a lot of great female characters at Valiant, and more should get chances to headline their own stories. Livewire and Faith jump out as the most viable, but the seasonal mini approach of Doctor Mirage works great! I'd obviously love Mirage ongoing, but the current format is fine too.

But really I just want more Valiant! :D

Of course, I love LiveWire, and I most certainly think she could carry her own weight in an ongoing. But I think Faith will be the first female-led ongoing from Valiant. I wouldn't mind Roku and Punk Mambo having at least a mini, and I can't wait for Dr Mirage's return, she definitely, should have an ongoing.

if they marketed it right they could pull in so many new valiant fans with a faith book.

I know, right? The kind of themes and issues you could deal with in a Faith book would be unique in comics. Not many obese superheroes, after all. Only problem is that Dysart set the bar for her characterization super high, which would be a big hurdle to overcome.

I think I would rather have a well written book instead of one solely based around what gender the character is, which isn't to say that I don't think Valiant could use some more diversity in their line up

I think they're really missing the boat by not giving Mary Maria a book of her own. It would be so awesome.

I feel it is a missed oipportunity that we don't have a Geomancer book with Kay McHenry.

Three ongoings with a female lead that I would definitely buy into:

Punk Mambo- I don't think I need much explanation here.
Geomancer- team up with Eternal Warrior at first and then goes off to be her own standalone title.
69 and her kin- it would be a fun change of pace that I would totally buy into. Thoughts?

And of course I am glad Dr. Mirage is getting her own continuing mini series. An ongoing would be nice, but I am content.

THIS.

Kay was a great character. I loved that she was so flawed when we first met her. I am sure in her short time as a Geomancer she learned a lot, but I feel like a series starring here really could've focused on here trying to overcome those flaws and become both a better person and fulfill her role as a geomancer.

+1

So much lost potential.

If I really like a female VEI character - they kill her.. :( (RIP Pulse  )

I just keep waiting for Mary Maria and Doctor Mirage to get the axe...

A bit of a throwback, but Sister Gabriela from the 1994 Ninjak run needs to come back in a reimagined form. It could be so great to read a "Sister Gabriela, Vatican Intelligence" ongoing or mini by either Kindt or Fred Van Lente, with half-serious Da Vinci-code-like stories with other female nunjas.

I wonder if Valiant wouldn't be better served by just having a quarterly anthology book with one-shots about characters like Punk Mambo, the 1%, or whatever. Charge $10 and give me 60 pages or so.

Of course, anthologies must not sell very well. Vertigo tries it every 5 to 10 years.

I think the problem with anthologies is that there are very few where there is a very strong lead to sustain sales. Marvel Comics Presents did it well when they made Wolverine the lead feature. Of course, that lead has to feature stories that matter as well. No one is going to be interested in a dumping ground
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.
