Hi this is Jduran2. I was member 388 in 2004. I can't believe we have over 3000 members. The 2004 members are the OG. Thank the heavens for Greg's Vision. I have been gone for 7 years with 3 soccer daughters and paying for two of them graduate from CU Boulder ($200,000). I am so glad to be back. I can't believe that I bought 10 copies of Harbinger 1 in the 1990's because I loved the cover. Then I read it. Wow!
Greg knows this, but for your newbies who may not know, Jim Shooter created the pre-unity universe and all of the characters first appearances. Jim was in Denver this weekend and I had the pleasure of spending some time with him. What a contrarian anti establishment, break the rules genius.
Given that I love the cover of Rai #0 and Harbinger 1, I asked Jim about the covers he created. He stated that he wanted to keep RAI 0 simple and wanted to make a statement about Bloodshot that we would never forget, and he was looking at ASM 129 first punisher when he had it popped in his head to have the character in a circle. Thus the iconic cover. He also knew that having a vintage ford mustang on the cover with Harbinger 1 would be eternal and unique. I was in heaven spending time with him given he was Mr. Valiant.
Anyway with no soccer games and plenty of money.... I am back. I am so glad I bought what I loved and have an incredible Valiant Collection.
In closing I had Jim sign the cover of my Rai 0, and Secret Wars 8 Mint covers and then I put it them in my safety deposit box. Kudos to Greg the Steve Jobs of Valiant Comics.

Re: 2004 Member is back
Thanks.
Something's never change, CBK is still a hoot. I have so much to catch up with. My gosh there are going to be 5 movies. The world is going to love the Valiant universe, WOW.
The group from 2004 that are still around are Jedi Knights. The were true Valiant Fans and when Greg launched this they were there for him. For the newbies the OG's know a lot about Valiant and are a great resource of knowledge. I can not imagine the collection these guys and gals have.
I know its been 8 years but what are the key few things I need to know about regarding what's going on today. Is there truly a synopsis?
What jumps out at me is that Valiant Comic book artists were the best. I stare at the covers in 2015 and they are so beautiful, As well as the writers. Bloodshot will probably make a ton of money although 10 years ago I would have bet the Harbinger Kids would have been the first movie.
Later.

While I have immense respect for him as a creator of great comics, I would love to have been a fly on the wall when he heard about the cash infusion and the subsequent movie announcement.valiantdude wrote:oh and of course, im sure jim didnt mention how he had a job at vei,the new valiant, and then pretty much f-ed them over for a fleeting job at dark horse.. bet he wishes he wouldnt have made that choice..it really happened though, jim shooter was working at the new valiant and thought they were amatuers...bad choice jim(in star trek bones voice)

Re: 2004 Member is back
Daniel has 37,000 posts. Wow. There has probably been a lot of discussion about Jim Shooter over the years on this board. People either love him or hate him. There is no in between. I have met him a few times. He is a genius and without him there wouldn't be this incredible valiant universe and the board Greg created. But on the other hand he is a shark, my way or the highway kind of guy, who just flat out *SQUEE* people off. What a combination. He is very intimidating in person and add to that his 7 foot frame, he literally talks down to you. He is not for the weak of soul. So I wonder what they will say at his services.

Re: 2004 Member is back
No doubt the dude is a genius, Ive even read a recent interview where he revealed that some of the writing work of early valiant credited to Bob Layton and others is actually his work.. He only used their names in the credits because they needed to have a certain amount of work to keep them on the payroll..
However, hes buddies with the dark horse owner from way back..That guy offered him his own universe of licensed titles, which were the og gold key characters including magnus, solar, and turok..
He was working with the new valiant, vei, in the development stage.. When he got the dark horse gig, he promptly quit vei, and a lawsuit ensued..
That was 2010-2011, I dont think any of his books at dark horse lasted more than 4 issues..
The super bummer is if he wouldve sucked it up and helped out, he would still be employed and maybe the vei books wouldve been better and more cohesive than they turned out to be.. but he made a different choice..

Having talked to Bob a bunch of times, his story is very different from Jim's, specially on those writing credits. Both have huge egos and it's probably somewhere in between.valiantdude wrote:No doubt the dude is a genius, Ive even read a recent interview where he revealed that some of the writing work of early valiant credited to Bob Layton and others is actually his work.. Dinesh really wanted to have Jim as part of the gang. What happened with DH was for the best IMHO. I doubt Shooter would have let them be creative and hire all these amazing indie writers. He'd do his own thing and it would make for a very predictable and boring product. (IMHO, again).

Re: 2004 Member is back
yeah youre probably right about the indie writer thing, but he wouldve schooled them on editing which has been a big issue with vei..
Overall they mightve had a more professional product if jim wouldve strictly stayed in the editior role... its just a bummer because i cant help but think what couldve been..
On a side note, Im still hoping they do some 'classic' universe books and maybe forgive jim for being a *SQUEE* and bring him on as a writer.. like work for hire, can all be done online, never has to step foot in the office..haha not likely though..
