Holy Grail Runs

Post by StarBrand »

Have you ever completed a holy grail run of comics, are you pursuing one now, or do you have a deep desire to start one? I've never done it. For years now I've wanted to piece together all Solar books from each publisher slabbed. I've never followed through on it, though. I have a good friend who for years has worked on an X-Men (1963) run, constantly upgrading it as he went, and when CGC began he started getting the run slabbed. If he submitted his run to CGC now he would have the second highest X-Men run registered.

Maybe not holy grail runs, but there are a few runs that I have slowly dug out of cheap bins.
Scalped is one that jumps to mind, also Willingham's Elementals run.
I also slowly got all the Crossgen universe. I did also have a complete What if vol 2 run.

One that I am still working in is Lone Wolf and cub (just need the last issue)
I'm also doing the same for BPRD.

I'm sure there are more, but those are jumping to my mind.

Oddly enough, the Dell and Gold key hero books are pretty damn tough to put together.

I put together a full run of Doctor Solar. I have all the Magnus stories but not all the issues, because after a certain point they started reprinting stories.

I have never even bothered to figure out what Turok issues I have.

There are a few grail runs which I have completed just to find out that there is no end to the journey. Once I complete a run, I'll be itching to look for some other runs to collect. I started with X-Men which I managed to get a full run from #1 - 544 including all annuals. Then I moved up to ASM which I completed early this year from issues #1-700 including all annuals and AF15. Now I am branching out to Thor, Daredevil and Avengers.

Impressive.

I have no firm ideas for collecting any specific runs, but two notions that always persist are: to collect a copy of every comic published in the month and year of my birth and to collect Golden Age issues of Capt. Marvel.

I had the good fortune of an uncle giving me golden age copies of Plastic Man 3 and Police Comics 20.He died shortly thereafter. I've been slowly putting together a full run of each, in tribute. I'm not necessarily going for quality, but I can have managed to grab some key issues.

Every moon knight and every appearance ( unless just cameo)

Hoping to complete ghost rider soon :thumb:

Spectre was my ultimate goal - but not going to happen with the cost of early appearances.
I wish their was a Spinal Tap comic, and I had a copy CGC graded at 11.

I think my greatest dream of collecting a run would be Batman, but I don't allow myself to even think about it.

Wow. Have you figured out what rank this would give you in the registry for X-Men?

Working on completing my hellboy run. I need two variants (1 variant that I will never buy) and one regular issue.

Just finished my BPRD, witchfinder, abe sapien, etc. runs (all issues and all variants)

Lastly looking at finishing my High Society Cerebus run. Need a bunch of issues
Pull List: I only buy TPB's, HC's and Hellboy comics

Incredible Hulk, including 1-6 and Astonish 59-101....the first 6 are lower grades and #1 has color touches.

I don't think I've read any of the Tales To Astonish stories, unless maybe in a 70s reprint book and I didn't know what they were at the time. Are they pretty good?

They are the opposite. Most Silver Age stuff is pretty tough to read. Origins are good, but not all.

I am behind on Astonish on my blog, but most of the reviews are rather negative.
