HARBINGER #1 DISCUSSION THREAD! FULL SPOILERS!
So... awesome?
I loved this book. Like, it haunts me at night I like it so much.
Wow.
Joe Irons is back! Harada isn't that evil! Or is he? Pete's a messed up kid!
And Pete's gonna kick that SWAT team butt next issue.

Love the book, love the writing, art was meh in a lot of places and really good in others. But they're setting the table for something great. Can't wait for the next one!

'Veen and I talked for a while about the art. I wonder if he will chime in here.

I thought the street scenes were good, but close-ups of faces seemed kind of, uh, "sketchy."

I thought a lot of the "sketchiness" of the faces was kinda deliberate, to create the tone that things are a bit off about some people, and help set mood and tone.
Re: HARBINGER #1 DISCUSSION THREAD! FULL SPOILERS!
I got a Barry Windsor Smith vibe....where all the faces seem to have the same features.depluto wrote:Love the book, love the writing, art was meh in a lot of places and really good in others. But they're setting the table for something great. Can't wait for the next one!

Re: HARBINGER #1 DISCUSSION THREAD! FULL SPOILERS!
Great read. I agree, the art was hit and miss, but overall I liked it. I didn't get to my shop until a few hours after they opened today, so I can't say how many copies they had to start with, but there were only 2 left after I got mine. Same with X-O 2. I'm sure there will be threads about that topic, but I thought it was a good sign.
This post has been carefully constructed so as to add absolutely nothing to any discussion or topic.

I loved Harbinger. Loved. Was worried, but think the art is stylized. The thought bubble cover has grown on me. A lot. Fave quote on it?
Let's start a new thread.

Re: HARBINGER #1 DISCUSSION THREAD! FULL SPOILERS!
I was kind of meh at the beginning of the story because I thought they were going to take it on the "two drugged out losers on the run from the law" and Joe's early dialog was a little to "cool" for my taste. The story really picked up after that, though. I really like what they did with Harada, and I like how the story is somewhat mimicking the previous incarnation (with the Kris mind trick). I also like what they've done with Kris so far. I'm really excited to see where this story arc is going and to learn more about the Mr. Tull character.
I've also noticed that they set it up nicely for a #0 issue.

Re: HARBINGER #1 DISCUSSION THREAD! FULL SPOILERS!
Just finished reading the book.
OK
I hate to start out with a gripe, and I wouldn't have started this way if it was only once... or twice..
...BUT...
...there are THREE panels where they spell "foreclosure" as "FORCLOSURE".
THAT'S NOT A WORD! COME ON, VALIANT! YOU'RE BETTER THAN THIS!

(I"m going to ASSUME that the misspelling was deliberate, and you are trying to find out which Valiant fan will help you catch those kinds of problems in the future as a proof-reader. Ok, you got me. Here I am. I'll be your proof-reader. You're welcome.)

Re: HARBINGER #1 DISCUSSION THREAD! FULL SPOILERS!
I LOVED this book. Like others, I had misgivings about the art based on the preview (liked the young Harada scenes, but not the Pete scenes), but by the end of the book I was kinda diggin it.
I couldn't get to my LCS today so I read the digital, which included a digital exclusive (nice little touch, VEI, by the way) of a few inked, un-colored pages. I really think the coloring had a (negative?) effect on the pages because the inks are pretty tight.
As for the story, it hit all the big points from the original while putting a new spin on Pete, espescially. Getting to know Joe was a great addition, and this Mr. Tull is intriguing...Could he represent HARD Corps?

So is Tull the one who's lost his mind, or is it Joe?BugsySig wrote:Joe did say Pete thinks his powers don't work on Tull...but then said he was changed bay all the mind wipes...hmmmgreg wrote:I got a very "alien" feeling from him... but I might be way off-base on that.BugsySig wrote:Mr. Tull is intriguing...Could he represent HARD Corps?
I'm not sure that Joe is with it enough to really be interpreting everything clearly. He might still be right, but do you trust Crazy Joe?

For some reason, I trust Joe here. Don't ask me why, but it seems too big of an insight into the Tull character to have been written as just Crazy Joe talk.Dr. Solar wrote:So is Tull the one who's lost his mind, or is it Joe?BugsySig wrote:Joe did say Pete thinks his powers don't work on Tull...but then said he was changed bay all the mind wipes...hmmmgreg wrote:I got a very "alien" feeling from him... but I might be way off-base on that.BugsySig wrote:Mr. Tull is intriguing...Could he represent HARD Corps?

And I wouldn't say he's lost his mind, just been affected by multiple mind wipes to the point that his demeanor and personality have changed?

It was poetic writing. He didn't go to a foreclosed home... he went to a home FOR-CLOSURE! (see what I did there?greg wrote:Just finished reading the book.![]()

So, since Joe is Pete's best friend, do you think Pete might be the one responsible for his psychosis?Dr.

I'm thinking they met at the hospital, so Joe would have been schizophrenic already. Though Pete rattling around in his head here and there may have caused some more damage...at least it's possible.etos45 wrote:So, since Joe is Pete's best friend, do you think Pete might be the one responsible for his psychosis?Dr.

In Shooter's Valiant, the original Pete was supposed to be gay. It's possible the new Valiant will take this road too.
