Mirage Studios?
With the TMNT sale to Viacom and no other titles to speak of for years, is Mirage Studios a dead universe?

Re: Mirage Studios?
I think it makes sense to let it become one real soon, though wont be surprised if someone wants to carry on using it to publish seeing as it has a 25 year history.sanman wrote:With the TMNT sale to Viacom and no other titles to speak of for years, is Mirage Studios a dead universe?

more Mirage as an actual publisher themselves rather than the title TMNT.Knightt wrote:TMNT is pretty iconic... you guys think that it could possibly slip in the DU ? I am not saying that it couldn't but after all that happened with these characters, it is kind of hard to imagine them going full on DU.
Now that someone else owns the whole rights, will they continue to publish new books and if so will it be under Mirage?
If not they get added to my list for sure.
Heck i already collect plenty of INdy publishers as a completist anyway and they are on my list. so it would just a case of swapping them to another section.

No nonononononono, i already cleared the point up above

Will MIRAGE become a Dead Universe as a publisher?
The Turtles will be here till the earth crashes into the sun, we all know that.

While not many, there were comics published by Mirage other than TMNT titles. Wikipedia list the following:Draco wrote:Doorman wrote:The property was recently sold for $60M therefore it's not going to be "dead" for quite some time. The Turtles have a lotta life left in them.

I perceive a general belief that because the TMNT will remain relevant their universe won't be considered dead. I question this thinking as there is a clear distinction between the independent Mirage comic--with each turtle wearing a red bandanna and having a bit more aggression--and the characters licensed for TV and children's sleeping bags.

I suppose it all depends on how you define a dead universe, then.
For example, currently the Ultraverse is a dead universe (because it's populated by character that interact) ... BUT do you consider Malibu Comics a dead universe? I don't know if I would since it's made up of several "dead universes". I mean, each of those Bravura books are totally independent of each other.

Many publishers that are no longer with us produced titles that survived by moving on to pastured greener.
The term Dead Universe is used to describe a collection of titles under one publisher with a shared continuity.
That doesn't actually account for too many of the Indy publishers of the last twenty years if take a closer look, with some of them like First only having a handful cross over in a very small manner.
So what we list as DU's is really more a collection of well known publishers that put out a varied selection of books with varied results in terms of quality and name creators.
I did at one point on my master list separate them into two categories, one for actual Dead Universe publishers and one i called Defunct publishers, but in the end i just see them as all the same, which is a Dead Publishers, now collectively known all as DU's.
Of course this isn't a rule, each to their own.
So overall my point and i stress my point about Mirage was that if they cease to exist, IMO they will become a DU regardless of where the TMNT go afterwards.

After long and great consideration, I have figured out that the definition of "Dead Universe" is a moving target.Doorman wrote:I suppose it all depends on how you define a dead universe, then.
