Eternal Warrior - One of the Better Ideas

Post by 400yrs »

When reading EW, the issues usually start with 2-3 pages of EW in the past. Usually, it's a significant event that Gilad experiences. For instance in issue #18, he ran into Judas right after he received the 30 pieces of silver.

Often, these opening pages in the past are my favorite part of the book. It's nearly always interesting. I'm actually a bit bummed when we come back to the present and it's not much more than EW fighting Darque or his henchmen or some other villains.

I think going back to the past is a great story-telling mechanism that shouldn't be restricted to only the first 2-3 pages of the issue. If you look at some of the truly great recent Marvel books like Captain America or Immortal Iron Fist, they are not afraid to use the past throughout the book.

The problem with EW in VH1 for me is that his past is intriguing, but in the present, he's only a fighter and not much else. Not a thinker who uses his past experience brilliantly..... in fact, he rarely ever mentions anything from his past in the current.

If VEI can find a writer who can use the past and write him as a strong character in the present, they may have something exciting. I'm surprised this wasn't picked up as a movie option rather than Harbinger.

The coloring should be a bit different as well looking at the past. Marvel often uses different artists and colorist for past sequences.

Agreed! EW was a fun read and the historical aspects was very interesting.

Yes, a EW movie would be a lot of fun. Someone get cracking on writing this one :thumb:

I always enjoyed how EW was ALWAYS at some crucial point in history and NOT in a Forest Gump style either. The past was always in relation to something in the current story and it worked out great.

Wasn't those original 30 pieces of silver part of a major story line at some point ? Necromatic energy or something ?

yep. Started in 16 or 17. It's Daque and his goons vs. EW and Geoff looking for the coins.

And THAT is what I liked about it... present day story, grounded in history (or whomever re-wrote that history)

It would need to be someone who had a depth of knowledge of American and World history. Maybe even a history teacher. I wish I knew one that also loved Valiant comics.

:hm: ....... where can we find one?

I liked what Ostrander did in terms of showing the effects of Gils history on his present. As for somebody steeped in history...Elveen isn't the only one here. I guess its fisticuffs to determine the winner, lol.

The first movie was great, but the rest were just mediocre. Didn't watch too much of the TV series, so can't really comment on it much.

. Until the last season and a half, I found the series not only excellent but the best Highlander material out there.

Yes, if you haven't seen the original movie you should grab it. If you can find the version with the extra WW2 scenes that explain the origin of his secretary, Rachel, it adds a nice twist to the film.

It was my favorite film for a long time.

Indeed, see the first one and then quit... If you see the others you will only be wasting time and you willbe disappointed at home the took a great concept and really messed it up.

The TV series was pretty good too.

Indeed. "The Source" is so bad that a friend and I decided to call any truly rotten film or tv show "sourceable"...if that lets you know what I think of that steaming pile of crap.

100%!

When Gil is introduced in Solar though, he does seem to be very much a product of his past. He appeared to be a walking Art of War encyclopedia and then they went completely away from that aspect of his character.

xodacia81 isn't a teacher but he's enough of an historian to count, I suppose.

Yes I believe that is the directors cut, much better than the theatrical version. Great flick, loved the segues to the scenes in the past. And Queen did the music too, lights out. EW creators must've been thinking about Connor MacLeod at some point. I believe Highlander the series started airing around when EW 1 came out .. hmmm ....
