New Dark Horse Magnus Series?
Is this book going to be a mini-series? I was under the impression it was an ongoing book, but when checking on DCBS they have it listed as a four issues LS,
MAGNUS ROBOT FIGHTER #2 (OF 4)
MAGNUS, ROBOT FIGHTER #2 Jim Shooter (W), Bill Reinhold (A), Wes Dzioba (C), and Raymond Swanland (Cover) On sale Sept 15 FC, 40 pages $3.50 Miniseries At the feet of the milespires of the utopian megalopolis North Am, in the shadowy regions where the dregs of humanity dwell, Magnus invades the stronghold of the 'Metal Mob'-human criminals who use robot muscle to plunder and terrorize the city. Big Guns, the cyborg mob enforcer, along with scores of brutal thug-robs and assassins, stands between Magnus and the 'Pens,' where kidnap victims await ransom, auctioning into off-world slavery, or being sold by weight as a protein source to the Arcturians. Leeja Clane and the stunningly beautiful Cinnette, both kidnap victims, are prime material for the chattel trade. In a lawless land, Magnus fights against an army of ruthless killers to save the Metal Mob's prisoners, especially the woman he is quickly falling in love with. Magnus is back with a vengeance! Written by comics legend Jim Shooter and illustrated by Bill Reinhold. Re-imagined by comics legend Jim Shooter
, does anyone know for sure?

Re: New Dark Horse Magnus Series?
The publisher and the senior writer are saying two different tales. I will ask at the SDCC Dark Horse panel. I'll post here the instant they answer my question via my internet phone...
Some people have read Shooter's email and say its a closed case, but the publisher is listing ALL their new titles as minis.
Argue which side you want, but we will hear from Richardson and Shooter in two weeks.

They are doing this with Terminator, too. The second mini-series even has a different subtitle, but the action continues from the previous mini.Todd Luck wrote:They may just be making each plotline a miniseries like they do with BPRD (and used to do with most of their titles), it is Dark Horse afterall.

Then I'm done with Magnus, Robot Fighter after #4, if they restart it as an ongoing series, fine I might buy it but ONLY if it's an ONGOING series, but if it's another mini-series then forget it. I will not buy a series that is just a bunch of pointless, never-ending mini-series again.Todd Luck wrote:They may just be making each plotline a miniseries like they do with BPRD (and used to do with most of their titles), it is Dark Horse afterall.

That kind of number scheme has bugged me ever since John Byrne's Next Men. It started with #19. Although it was officially #19 of the ongoing series, the cover numbering and the solicitation tried to make it look like a new #1 and listed it as "John Byrne's Next Men: Faith #1." As soon as the four issue "Faith" series was over, we had another new #1 with the "Power" storyline, although it was really #23.
I hated that then, and I'll hate it if they do something like that now. But I'll still buy it.

Looks like Turok will be a mini-series as well per Dark Horse (towards the end of the attached link).

Ok, I just became much less interested in this relaunch. I was hoping for a new Jim Shooter Universe, doesn't look as if thats what Dark Horse is interested in doing. I hope they prove me wrong, but my hopes are fading fast. For me, I just hate the endless miniseries style of story telling that has become the norm for Dark Horse.

Both Magnus and Solar appear to be on a 6 week schedule, so any space between plotline (or miniseries) would probably be 6 weeks unless there's a skip month (which happens on ongoing series too).StarBrand wrote:I wonder how much time will be between mini-series.JCVaughn wrote:They are doing this with Terminator, too. It just comes down to the labeling on the cover. For the fifth issue, will it be Magnus 5 or Magnus with a new subtitle on the cover and one on the cover (and "a 5th in a series" on the inside cover)? Honestly I'm betting on Magnus #5 and that the miniseries desigination that's on some sites is a mistake like Shooter said. Since I collect a couple Dark Horse titles I'm used to the "ongoing series as a series of miniseries" format but obviously it can cause some confusion.

I haven't seen any indication they're not interested in a new Jim Shooter Universe. Whether they label every plotline a new miniseries or as an ongoing series doesn't effect the contents of the stories or the release schedule. Whether the fifth issue is Magnus #5 and or "Magnus: the Second Plotline #1" is just a matter of labeling on the cover. I'm betting on Magnus #5 personally since Shooter said the miniseries label was a mistake.orbitalshift wrote:Ok, I just became much less interested in this relaunch. I hope you are right, to me the miniseries way of presenting stories is just less interesting, maybe I'm just old school, but I like the continuity that comes with a monthly series. If the issues come monthly you are right its just semantics, if on the other hand we get a four issue Magnus run once every 12 to 18 months I think that changes things at least for me.

Looks like the Star Wars titles and Usagi Yojimbo are the only "regular numbered" series. Check it out for yourself...

If you are uncomfortable taking my word for it, the 30+ issues I have of the current series ought to be evidence enough.slym2none wrote:I missed the Conan book, but still don't see Buffy on that page... and that's all I have to go by. On Terminator there hasn't been a break yet, but that's just an example...StarBrand wrote:I wonder how much time will be between mini-series.JCVaughn wrote:They are doing this with Terminator, too. Well since everyone involved with the project from Mike Richardson to Jim Shooter have said their ongoing series I think it's safe to say there will be no lag time between minis, if they do decide to label them as minis. Like I said Dark Horse been doing an ongoing series of miniseries with BPRD set in a interconnected universe of titles (with Hellboy, etc) for years now so I'm not real worried about it.orbitalshift wrote:I hope you are right, to me the miniseries way of presenting stories is just less interesting, maybe I'm just old school, but I like the continuity that comes with a monthly series. Yea, Dark Horse used to be known for doing almost all their series as miniseries (sometimes treated as ongoing series, sometimes treated as seperate, unconnected stories).
Now they do ongoing series like Star Wars, Buffy, Conan, Yosagi, sporadic miniseries like Solomon Kane, ongoing titles that are told through series of miniseries like BPRD and Terminator, and titles they do a miniseries of that they never seen to do again like Kull (sorry, it just really bugs me they only did one mini LOL).
They seen to leaning towards traditional ongoing series on their "main" titles so I'm still thinking Jim Shooter is right on the miniseries label being incorrect. To be honest, the miniseries thing on BPRD has never made any sense, since it's extremely hostile to new readers (there is zero effort to orient you to back story) so I don't see how slapping number one on the beginning of ever convoluted plotline with 5 years worth of backstory is going to attract new readers.

I would say it isn't going to attract new readers, and people like me that may be interested in a given title are turned off by not knowing what order the stories happened without resorting to publish date and even that I wouldn't have much confidence in if I were new to a title. Some books I can see it, Indiana Jone for example, the stories don't really need to be connected, as the character is already a known property that isn't going to change much. I just want more than that from this relaunch.
