Valiant's obsession with exploding windows...
Just about everytime I sit down and read a run of Valiant books,
there's at least one panel (or cover) where someone flies through a window,
shattering the glass outward in a million pieces.
Possibly, the most obvious is on the cover of Ninjak #1...
which looks like it was taken from a panel in Rai #0...
but there are definitely others...
I really don't know why it's such a common theme,
but it seems a little too often to be coincidence.
I figured I'd start a thread and we can make a list of these as we find them,
if anyone's interested...
(I'll edit this list when more are found...)
- Archer & Armstrong #0 Page 21, Jul 1992
- Archer & Armstrong #2 Page 1, Sep 1992
- Eternal Warrior #2 Page 21, Sep 1992
- Harbinger #11 Page 5, Nov 1992
- Rai #0 Page 7, Nov 1992
- Bloodshot #1 Page 4, Feb 1993
- Ninjak #1 cover, Feb 1994

pages 24-25 in harb 25 also...exploding buildings in both
"someone going through a window". Exploding buildings could be a different list.

Exploding windows? Hey, you gotta destroy something to make up for the fact the Valiant heroes couldn't trash a city every issue like those at DC and Marvel
.
Off the top of my head....
Shadowman 3 (Sosa goes through a window)
Shadowman 4 (the Miller cover)
Shadowman 24 (they actually make a joke about Jack cutting himself on the glass)
Shadowman 27 (smashes a skylight to get to Darque only to be blasted though a window)
Secret Weapons 3 (Gilad jumps through one to escape the Speedshots if I remember correctly)
Eternal Warrior Yearbook (don't want to spoil anything but lets just say the apartment window gets broken
)
That's the only definate destuctions of glass I can think off the top of my head without my comics in front of me. I'm sure their's a hundred other examples of Valiant Heroes truimphing over those evil, evil windows
.

Gut feeling...it has to do with two of the common comic tools that Valiant never used (at least during the Shooter era).
1) No sound effects. Action has to be dynamic and give you the feeling of sound without using a bold "Keeeerashhhhhh" across the panel. Breaking glass is certainly dynamic.
2) No motion lines. If you can't use motion lines, then the stop motion of the glass acts as the motion lines, showing that something is in motion.
3) No thought balloons. Has nothing to do with glass, but I just love bringing up ways in which Valiant was different!

I can't say for sure without access to my collection but it seems like Shadowman was the worst "window offender". It seems like he was always smashing through a window (or making someone else go through one).
Solar, if I remember correctly, was the nicest to windows because he would always phase through them to get in and out of buildings (but still used them instead of doors,hmm...). Ofcourse even he broke some glass in Solar 2 (a two way mirror at the Harbinger foundation). It's hard to control that rage against the glass in VH-1.

My friends and I used to joke that directive #4 in Robocop was "break glass"

I stared at this one for a minute before I decided it didn't qualify.drmirage wrote:![]()
Which character went out a window?
(Yes, they're all car windows... but which one went through one?)
I think the answer is 'none'.
