THE Valiant Comic Book
Okay all,
I just want to pick your brains, 'cuz I love reading about your humble beginnings and all that. Not sure if this is the right forum, so please feel free to move my thread accordingly
BUT...
What would you consider THE Valiant comic that solidified your love for these books?
I'm realizing how difficult this question is, since there are so many good books, BUT...I would have to say the single book that made me fall for Valiant was:
Archer & Armstrong #1
It had action, adventure, a gripping plot, and the humorous banter between the two lead characters and the rest of the VH Universe just blew me away. Plus, BWS artwork. 'Nuff Said!

This may be blasphemy to some of y'all, but A&A never really did much for me. Although Shadowman has always been far and away my favorite Valiant book, I think the first book to really knock me upside the head and love the entire Valiant universe was Eternal Warrior #1. Later, Rai #0 would have almost the same impact.

Yeah, A&A #0 was probably close too for me, since I read both issues 0 and 1 in one sitting. EPIC!Elveen wrote:Magnus #1-4 got me interested, but prob. A&A #0.JonesyAZ wrote: What would you consider THE Valiant comic that solidified your love for these books?
And I have to agree that Shadowman is one fine title. My favorite issue is the Aerosmith issue...hahahahaha. It's cheesy, and an interesting look at the times.

He was only called Sniper in the TPB and the HC.comicsyte95 wrote:X-O Manowar #3 my first Valiant comic.I liked the fight vs Sniper who should have been used more then the once (he would have been a great hero/villian vs Bloodshot or Ninjak in my opinion).I also like the humor... You a Dog! You a Cat!
In the comic, he was called X-Calibre. The name and character first appeared in an Epic (Marvel) comic and both the name and character were owned by Steve Englehart who was on the Valiant bandwagon early on. Marvel tried to lease the name X-Calibre from Engelhart for the book that became Excalibur. Years later, Marvel threatened to sue Valiant over the name X-O Manowar (since you know, Marvel owns the letter X) so Valiant published a "go f yourself" to Marvel by using the creator-owned X-Calibre and billing it as his triumphant return. For the reprint in the TPB, his name was changed to Sniper and in the cover gallery and mention of X-Calibre and his triumphant return were censored. In the HC, for the actual story they obviously used an old TPB since he is called Sniper but the cover for issue 3 does not have the censoring from the TPB and again touts the return of X-Calibre.
In the story, Harada talks to X-Calibre on the phone and refers to his previous appearance in the Epic Comics book but unfortunately both the name and issue of the book escape me.

The name of the book is Coyote. It started at Eclipse comics and had a 16 issue run under the Epic imprint at Marvel. X-Calibre is featured on the cover to issue 6 but I could not find a full list of his appearances. I imagine the full run of Coyote can be had for $10 shipped or less - not a high in demand book.
Steve Englehart has a gallery of the covers on his website.

Armorines #2. This was one of the very first Valiant comics I got - I bought a ton that were on sale when I discovered Valiant - and it's always stuck in my mind. From the great Calafiore cover and interior art to the story Jorge Gonzalez. And Gunny, who is probably my favorite comic character of them all. I still cuddle up with it on cold nights.

Y'know, the one Valiant cover that I just keep going back to and admire the work of it is the cover to Armorines #4.Burrito Boy wrote:Armorines #2. Yeah, that is a great picture of Gunny. I also like all the junk surrounding him, especially the box of cards next to him. I don't know if those are supposed to be Valiant cards but if they are it's a nice touch.JonesyAZ wrote:
