Worst Universe

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

Worst Universe

Post by ian_house »

Theres plenty of discussion here about great universes that have sadly came to an end but let me pose this question to you Dead Universe devotees… Which is the worst?

Which dead universe simply made no sense, had no truly great heroes or stories to tell. Which universe had, in your opinion, no artistic merit?

I pose this question to you devotees and want, desire, even NEED to hear your complaints about the most pitiful universe!

Hopefully this will create a great little debate!

Based on reading only a couple of issues so far (so this opinion may change! :P ) - Triumphant.

Marketed as the 'collectors universe'; sub-Vertigo books with poor dialogue, mediocre art (at best) and seemingly no hook to grab me. Terrible!

I'll still acquire a set though...

Does that count? Surely a universe has to be 'alive' before 'death' can be pronounced...?

:hm:

I have nearly a complete run of this one and spent less than $5 getting it (less shipping) - Triumphant.

Terrible stuff.

Once again, leonmallet chooses wisely in matters of the DU.

I agree, by far the worst of the DU's.

Allow me to echo: Triumphant ... although, I imagine Dagger is up there, too.

I like to feel that I can recognise and be strangely attracted to *SQUEE* comics at times...

...luckily I also occasionally stumble on the gems of good stuff that the rest of you already knew about!

Well my :twocents: here, I would have to say Triumphant BUT only on the art, horrible art. I have read a few issues though and if I take the book seriously, it appears as if there is some decent story behind those childlike markings within panels.

Lightening comics is right up there as well !!

I agree, I read a couple issues of the Chromium Man, plus a web page on the character, and I thought the concept was pretty good.

Weren't they the ones that did all that 3D stuff back in the day?

My vote still goes to Trimphant. I couldn't get past the art to care about the story!

They did indeed do many 3-D comics but Blackthorne was a very diverse company.

They published all kinds of stuff.

movie/music/TV/cartoon adaptations - Rambo, Battletech, Transformers, GI Joe, California Raisins, Moonwalker, Star Wars

anthropomorphics - pre-teen dirty gene kangaroos, hamster vice, cold blooded chameleons, alien ducklings, nervous rex, midnite

parody - laffin' gas, failed universe, freak out on infant earths, man of rust

action/adventure - roachmill, labor force

underground - bizarre 3-d zone

fantasy - enchanted valley, goldyn

sci fi - beyond mars

classic reprints - dick tracy, brenda starr, jungle comics, planet comics

Blackthorne had quite a few good books, but they were overwhelmed by the number of stinkers they put out. I highly recommend Roachmill to any who like to collect cancelled titles. After the initial six issues by Blackthorne, the book was later picked up by Dark Horse. I enjoyed it.

I just grabbed a stack of Bthorne books and yes they did good and bad.
Lots of licensed 3-d books including Transformers.

However so far i think either Dagger of Greater Mercury are the stinkers.

I used to think it was Triumphant, but upon lookng further, bad art aside they actually had a concept that was thought out and executed to a degree of ok.

I trade as Dead Universe Comics in the UK, which is no surprise to those who know of my legendary Dead Universe habit.
