Who collects oddball comic based themes?

Everything else comic-related that's not VALIANT-related.

Ok its a given, everyone here collects Valiant. We also like to collect in different genres, certain characters, writers, artists, comic runs, etc.

What I'm talking about are some more unusual focus's like maybe photo- graphic covers only, vampire appearances, romance comics, religious themes, comic nudity, etc.

The most focused I ever have undertaken was modern War comics (1980 up)
There is way more than I thought of in that genre too! :o

But do share.

I've restrained myself with comics to Valiants ... the only obsessive thing now I look for is Valiant-related stuff. But not too bad.

This is not quite what you were asking but I always buy little diecast cars if they have surfboards or are surfing related. Got about 30.

What are the highlights of your war collection Lobo? I really liked Ennis' War Stories.

Would it be considered odd to say I like to collect all the first appearance of characters? At the moment I'm still trying to assemble all the first appearances of the X-Men characters. Biggest difficulty I see is trying to get X-Men #1, Giant Size X-Men #1 and Hulk 181 at an affordable price.

Garth Ennis' War Stories (8 issues, waiting for more) are gold. Ennis also did an awesome 2 issue mini for DC on Enemy Ace. The story alone has got me looking at old Enemy Ace appearances but those get expensive. I recently finished a run of the 'NAM now I'm looking for a run 'Vietam Journal' from Apple comics. Someday I'll tackle Sgt. Rock etc...

If they would magically lower the prices of new comics to a respectable level, I would probably start buying stuff other than Valiant again but I don't see that happening.

I have a friend who collects 'rain' covers.

I collect covers with the name 'Joe' on them. ;)

Oh, and price variants are fun, especially the Canadian variants...I have a Batman #404 at $1. ;)

Modern (80's) war is absurdly difficult to find, ESPECIALLY established runs like Sgt Rock, Our Fighting Forces, GI Combat, etc.

Also hard to find is 80's Mystery in Space, House of Mystery, and World's Finest. ;)

I collect Batman issues that have The Joker on the cover. Also, Bronze-age issues that have red, yellow, or black covers.

Well its odd enough that's the first I've heard or considered it, but I'm sure there many other collectors looking for this theme too. Good one though!
Ash by Joe Quesada comes to mind.

No...just story related 'Joes'.

The most popular? Spidey #38.

I also have OUr Love #3-ish, which features the name 'Joe Howard' on the cover.

Doesn't SHOWCASE #1 from 1955 feature 'The Firefighters'? That would be a tough one to get!

Wasn't 'Just A Guy Named...Joe' the last issue of Spider-man done by Ditko? Why 'Joe'? Is that your name? Do you have 'Joe Psycho & Moo Frog'? I have a nice collection of Steranko covers, including non-comic covers (like the Shadow paperbacks from the 1970s). His Nick Fury stuff was awesome! Bloodshot by Steranko would have been cool!

Hi Joe! Talk like Yoda, you do...:)

Steranko's two volumes of "History of Comics" has always been a fav of mine. It's a shame he never completed the rest of it. Awesomely great covers, too!

FYI...Joe Psycho & Moo Frog was an independant title from around 1996.

well, since Jim is now retired, you wouldn't run into any more of his cards if you were still buying packs. :D

Eisenreich was a nice guy and a pretty amazing story. He was able to have a pretty successful baseball career even though he had Tourette's Syndrome. He was a big part of one of my all time favorite teams, the 1993 Philadelphia Phillies. I still curse Joe Carter for killing my Phillies in that World Series

I've got most of the Marvel reprints from the early '90s. After all, how many of you knew there was a gold edition of New Mutants #95, or a silver of ASM #361. Or a silver and gold of New Mutants #100. The printings on these were very small compared to the 1st prints, and if ultra-completionism ever takes these titles the way it has taken Valiant (Harbinger TPB 2nd print, for example) I'll be happy.

I rember the New Muntants #100 silver cover being well sought after when I was a kid who was just begining. Although it might just of been the area and the people I lived with instead of a global collector thing.

Hmmm, I've always come across these and usually flipped for a buck or two when I had the chance. Are there many people actively looking for these?

I collected when I was a kid, mostly from the 70s. I have thecomplete run of Marvel's Human Fly. anyone remember that title?
It never went anywhere. At the time, I thought it was cool, as this
character was somewhat real... does anyone know anymore about this title?

I always liked Kirby artwork. so I have a bunch of that.

Me. ;)

But...but...but...they're SECOND prints! :)

Yeah, there are gold 2nd prints to X-Men #270, #275, #282, X-Factor #60, New Mutants #95, #100, X-Force #1, New Warriors #1, Ghost Rider #5 (by FAR the best gold cover Marvel EVER!) as well as a 'red' 2nd print to 281. There are Silver Spidey #361 and 362 (though these look awful), and New Mutants #100. Fun, huh?

There's also a 2nd print to Ghost Rider #1, but the only difference is the Ghost Rider head in the UPC box instead of Spidey...

But...but..they're SECOND prints! :)
