Valiant Contest Finalists

Post by DJSpecter »

Instead of doing an eleventh question just for the sake of trying to get one of our two finalists out, I'll allow them both to be winners. By question three it was apparent that these two guys were either one and the same or perfect competition. Since this is all on the internet I won't decide which I believe to be true.

The final scores:
Byrneout -9
Magnus R. -9

Jaknife -2
Man of the Atom -2
danthecomicman-2
Todd Luck -2
Chuck-2
Brother J -1
dino-1
Magnus manowar -1
myron-1
mrwoogieman-0
Vault Keeper-0
BodaZofa-0

Each of you should please contact me with your address so I can know where to send your prize (meanwhile I try to figure out what I can give two winners).

Everyone should feel free to erupt with comments to this thread on this thread.

To show how perfect their competition, I'm going to reprint (with permission) both of their answers.

The question: Within 70 years, what is the difference (in years) between the birth of Gilad and the appointment of the second Geomancer?

My Answer: Between 90 and 152.

Byrneout:
oooOOOooo... this is a TOUGH one.

Alright then...

I'm going to start by establishing the birth year of the Eternal Warrior.

In Eternal Warrior #1, Gilad states he is "ten and one" years in one of the panels. A caption then tells us that we have fast-forwarded "30 years later". At this point in time of Gilad's life, his tribe is decimated, and his son is taken by the enemy.

In Eternal Warrior #37, when those same events are recounted, a caption states that the time is "3214 B.C.". So, since Gilad was 41 in 3214 BC, that means he was born in 3255 B.C. (remember, the years Before Christ count DOWN to zero, and not UP).

In Geomancer #7, we see Valurr confront an odd being. The year at this time is given in a caption as "3366 B.C."

In Geomancer #8, Valurr defeats the creature, whom is revealed to be Valurr's father, the first Geomancer Khanit. Upon Khanit's death, Valurr assumes the role of Geomancer.

So, the second Geomancer was chosen in 3366 B.C. Gilad was born in 3255 B.C. This means that the second Geomancer was chosen 111 years PRIOR to Gilad's birth.

To answer the question, the best estimate is that 111 years passed between the selection of the second Geomancer and the birth of Gilad.

Mind you, this is using solely the comics as source, and not any of the timelines, as you requested.

Woo. That was a tough one.

Magnus R.:

This definitely has to be checked in the comics.
Based on the timeline I once pulled from the comics, I would say
about 140 years. 3366 BC for Valurr becoming second Geomancer
(or first mortal Geomancer) and 3226 BC for birth of Gilad (11 summers
old in Eternal Warrior 1).

We'll see if I need to get back to you with more alternatives.
All the best,
Magnus

Hi again,

I checked the comics. In my notes I had noted the dates were approximate.

Considering you mention a time span as well, I feel rather confident I've
found what you are after.

Appointment of Valurr:
According to Geomancer 7 he defeated his father in 3366 BC
According to Geomancer 8 he was selected by the earth "meanwhile" his
father was still powerful and "his first real test" was the fight in 3366. So
the appointment must be very close before that. Probably same year.

Birth of Gilad:
The writers have really walked a thin line trying to make it all come
together with the Timewalker story (which mentions a date that can
safely be ignored). According to Eternal Warrior 37 and 38 he and his
family met spider-aliens in 3214 BC. This was obviously before his
"father" was killed, which in its turn was 30 years after he was 11
summers old. While it is not absolutely stated I would also say that
the events in 3214 came after his 11th summer. Both because those
events should have affected him more than what shows and also because
of Aram. While he still has no wives or children, Aram talks of fun, which
was supposed to be a step in his development, after when he was 9.
At the same time, since "30 years after" Aram would have wives that
were too old, I really think 3214 is very close to Gilad's 11th summer.
In summary, I stand by my answer.
All the best,
Magnus

PS, since they met at Cheop's court 600 years later, the birth should
have been between 3192 and 3169 BC. I select to consider the
"600 years" very approximate.

The writers have really walked a thin line trying to make it all come together with the Timewalker story (which mentions a date that can
safely be ignored).
Regarding this: Timewalker 0 says "4000 BC, give or take" this seems to have happened moments or hours before Vandal first cohabits with his wife. Based on the style of the approximation, this date, aside from being drastically different from any other date we have for these events (even the original ads that said "10,000 years and still fighting" would give an approximate date at 8,000 BC, not 4000) seems to have as much value as what EW1 said: "Before History."

Especially if the 4000 BC date was given based on Ivar's recollection, he would be likely to have a hard time remembering when things happened, especially since they didn't exactly have a calendar.

Neither of the finalists knew there were prizes. If anybody knows Magnus's mailing address or a PO Box or if Magnus wishes to differ his prize to someone else. (Estimated prize value: $4, it isn't a gold book, just a token prize really, maybe I'll even print up a certificate.)

Magnus prefers just the honor that will be with him forever, along with the shame that comes with not having gotten all ten questions correct.

Maybe for the next contest, we should have "special guest questions" from Magnus R. and myself. :)

Regardless, thank you very much for running this contest, DJSpecter. It was a blast to participate in, and I can't wait until there's another one!

I'm glad everbody enjoyed, that was the real idea. And as I always said about teachers, its easy to ask the questions when looking at the material, its much harder to answer the questions when you don't know where the question was coming from.

I certainly don't claim any licensing rights on a trivia contest. You can use my style if you wish or not, your choice. Whoever wants to do the next one- go for it.

I want to give my thanks to Tark Mulko, and Elzy daughter of Tekla for inspiring the contest.

And I want to name the contest at this point (a bit late, you might add) "The Seaborn Adamson Contest of Valiant Knowledge". And to Ric and to Magnus I present you both with "The Seaborn Adamson Memorial Award" -August 2004

Extra Credit Question (Because I can't verify it being true): Those who have read the first 11 Archer and Armstrong books know that Armstrong had a satchel with all sorts of magical stuff in it, most of which, it seems, Armstrong didn't know how to use. during those issues Armstrong looses his satchel and later recovers it and then it dissappears from the script. Who is the next person to be seen using Armstrong's satchel?
