Beloved Retailer Rory Root Passes Away

I put this thread here because Comic Relief in Berkeley is where I first discovered Valiant Comics.

I didn't know Rory Root very well, but his shop...evidently still going strong ( though I've long since moved from the area), enabled me to walk into the door between college classes and discover something that is still with me today.

Is that the shop very near the university with a counter in the back for the older comics? That'd be where I completed my collection of Gold key Magnuses. Nice shop. It is always sad when someone who is into comics passes away.

Yeah. If i remember right.

This would be the shop right off campus on University Ave. and just a few blocks from the BART station.

There was another comic book shop on the Telegraph Ave side of campus, too - but it isn't where I discovered Valiant - though I did go there often as well. I went back to that shop a few years ago and it had moved locations and changed a lot.

It seems Comic Reflief, though, managed to hold on to its charm. A lot of really positive comments about the place.

You can add mine. This is definitely the shop I remember after all these years.

definitely a shop I would like to visit if I ever got out that way. I bet they have a ton of underground comix. There's even an underground on the shelf in the picture of that article. Also, no offense meant to the deceased, but the guy looked like an underground comix collector/dealer.

I shopped at this store for a few years when I attended Cal. This was right when I got back into comics after my "gas & perfume" leave of absence. I would go down there every Wednesday and pick up my comics.

It was a great shop, and I remember them always making a point of being a bookstore, not a comic shop. The difference may be subtle, but makes a huge difference to the respectability of comics. The shop was always spacious, well lit, and nice to be in. Rory set a fine example for comics retailers.

Rest well, Rory.
