STORING PRE-UNITY VALIANTS

Post by Fanboy375 »

Ok, I just completed my 5th set of pre-unity valiants minus the Solar hardcover. So how should I store them?

Been looking at mylites2 with fullbacks and archival paper between the covers and first pages. What size should I look at? I heard the the current or modern size were not good (can't remembe which).
Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jonathan

WOW.
No. UNITY & PRE-UNITY (but no TPBs for unity as they can out after unity)

 .... I mis-read your post. But still, 5 Untiy Reds. Nice. 5 A&A golds, sweet. 10 EW golds (5 of each set) boo-yah!

Silver Age bags and boards. No need for archival paper, or fullbacks, or mylites, unless you REALLLY want them.

Never, ever, ever, ever buy "modern" or "regular" bags and boards, because they do not sit correctly in a box (they overlap), and the hard board edge will leave a lovely indentation in the book behind it.

I learned that the hard way.

And always make sure, before stacking boxes, that you have a good inch of empty space ABOVE the tops of the boards....or you will crush the comics.

Yes, I learned THAT the hard way, too.

What do you mean they "overlap"? I ask because I am also going to re bag and board my VH1 set and don't know what I should do.

I officially hate you, ZWH... :thumb:

All of my stuff is bagged and boarded in modern and now what you're saying makes some since. My thinking was there was less room for the comic to move around in with the modern and that would keep some of the damage off, but I never thought about the room in the box...

The short width of the boxes can fit silver age boards, so modern or current boards will leave a gap. With Sliver age boards there's little room for side to side motion, but with mordern/current boards they can overlap (i.e. side to side the book and be flush to the box to right or the left).

I agree about the Silver age bags and boards. They are the way to go.

A picture's worth 1,000 words....

Not that I'm opposed to the 1,000 words, but....efficiency at play....

That's from inside a long box. See how the one in front overlaps the one in back? With a board, and ANY pressure of ANY kind, that will leave a nice indentation the length of the board on the book in back.

People often confuse this with "spine roll", but it's not.

No, you want the book to be able to move around inside the bag....it doesn't move that much in a box, and it will protect the edges better. There's "give" room.

If you could find them, I would use 3 mil bags but they aren't always that easy to find.

I've put all my Pre Unity in Mylar bags, silver age style. I'm going to put the few variants I've got, along with the late-run items and some of the rare Acclaim, in Mylar bags. Not the crappy hard stuff, but the real bags, which I think look very nice. I know I'm prob crazy, but I like to change bags and boards every 6-12 months if they are regular bags.

I think handling books that much would do more harm than good.

I should have added "or as needed"

You guys are not alone, I also use Silver bag & boards for my personal collection. They help reduce the shaking syndrome whenever I move the long boxes around. As Z said, modern size bag & boards flop around all over the place often creating overlaps.

And all this time I have pictured in my head your amazing collection of comic books and you show... An Undertaker comic? :?
