hmmm
Why not put them in pdfs? It's such a better format!
I'm planning on making a few pdfs I think my first will be Harbinger #0

Use this program to open the file, it's great.
Just make sure you don't have too many things running at once.
Upon opening the program you won't see any buttons or anything, just an empty screen.
You need to right click and a menu will appear.
Just select Load files (or something like that) and go to the folder where you saved the file and select it.
That should open the images.
To go from one page to the other just scroll up and down.

Next step?
I scanned all of Harbinger #0
Questions for the people who would be downloading it:
1) How big should this file be, REALLY? It's at 10 MB now. The pictures and text look good @ 75 DPI and I'm afraid to go any lower because I think there will be a loss of quality.
2) Is someone hosting these things anywhere??
3) Is this copyright violation?

skot...that's awesome!...I had forgotten what a great read harb 1 is....
syd...
you'll either have to host it yourself or maybe send it to greg and he can host it here (I would think)
not sure about copywrite infringement if you aren't going to charge for it? Any lawyers out there up on copywrite law??? (being a teacher I copy about anything...as long as you tell people where it came from I think it's ok...)

Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?
Not a lawyer, but I've checked the subject. Here's a link to a great text: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/law/copyright/myths/part1/myron wrote:Any lawyers out there up on copywrite law???
I do not know the exact limits of "fair use", but one can copy more for education than otherwise.being a teacher I copy about anything
Basically the copyright holder decides. When I set up a site in 1995, I did ask Valiant and they said then that they always approved of fan efforts as long as they and the creators were named.

I agree, I'll gladly scan my issues and donate them if we standardize the format.Jaknife wrote:why doesnt this scanning thing become part of the site. i always thought it would be cool to be able to read the comics on the forums, much like what was done with the rai #0 here. like, rereading the valiant universe could actually be a place to read the issues.

Copying items for one's self is never a problem.
Copying items to give away to other people is not a problem.
Copying items for the purpose of making money is a major problem.
Copying items and getting reimbursed for the material(ie cost of copies) in not a problem.

Thanks Skot!!!! That was great!! I cant believe how great the scans look!!!
I was thinking that if someone were to post all of the files on kazaa then noone would have to host it. I keep my computer hooked up to it 24/7 as I am am sure anyone else with cable does. I will put the copy of harbinger 1 into my shared files to see if anyone can get it. The file name is harbinger001. Hopefully that helps
If nothing else they could be sold in a manner similar to Dan's Valiant Files cd that has a ton of stuff on it. I would think that the law regarding the materials would be similar.

Progress...?
OK, just to kinda get a feel for people's views on quality of scans, I posted 2 comics on one of my websites. They won't last long, as I need the space for other things, but here goes:
Harbinger#0 blue - 4.19 MB
Harbinger#25 - 4.46 MB
I highly recommend using the Rt. Click “save target as” method on the links above.
If you download these, you will notice that I scanned everything from the back cover to the advertisements in the middle of the book. I think it gives the true comic experience. I also combined the left and right pages into one image so that the double page spreads (and wraparound covers) can be fully appreciated the way the artists had intended.
Scanning like this prettymuch sacrifices the comic so I've only been using my doubles that are Condition:Good at best.
I can scan probably 2 comics a day. the next few on the list are:
-Harbinger#26
-Harbinger#27
-Harbinger#28
-Harbinger#31
-Harbinger#03 - no coupon
Which makes me wonder if anyone has a few bent up, well read copies that they'd like to toss my way to scan. I guess if you want them back, we could do that too. But I'm really looking for comics people have held on to for whatever reason, that are taking up space.
