My Valiant story

Post by Pilgrim »

Hi there,

I would like to introduce myself, I´m a german comic collector and live in cologne. My way to the Valiant universe was really long, I try to tell it shortly.

I´m specialized in the comic books of a german publisher named "Bildschriftenverlag", short "BSV". The BSV was a daughter of DC/National Periodical and turned into "Williams Verlag" after Warner became the new owner of DC in 1972.

BSV was the first publisher in Germany who published the Gold Key charakters like Doc Solar, Turok, Magnus and so on. This was in 1966.
There was only one disturbing problem - the comics are in black/white and I wanted to see my favourite charakters in full color, so I started collecting the US originals by dell and Gold Key. While I tried to get informations about the western publishing history, I mentioned that there was another publisher who published Doctor Solar, Turok and Magnus with new stories - Valiant. Now, Doctor Solar ( ok, solar-man of the atom ), Turok and Magnus are complete but Valiant is like a drug - I can`t stop collecting

My compliments to Greg, there is much love in this site and it gave me all informations I ever needed about Valiant. Thanx for this!

I have a question, I´m still looking for the Gold Key reprints from Valiant but it`s hard to find them in Germany ( the other products are no problem ). Are these reprints rare in the US too?

sorry for mistakes, I give my best...

ps. who is paulsmith56?????

Welcome! There are Gold Key reprints from Dark Horse that covers the complete runs of Doctor Solar, Turok, Magnus. Here's an example:

http://www.amazon.com/Magnus-Robot-Figh ... 306&sr=8-5

There are only a few Gold Key reprints by Valiant that I am aware of:

Original Doctor Solar 1
Original Turok 1
Original Turok 2
Original Magnus 1
Captain Johner and the Aliens 1
Captain Johner and the Aliens 2

Welcome to the board, thanks for sharing your story. The Gold Key reprints aren't rare, but not as easily found as some of the other, more overprinted books that came out around 1993. I'm sure if you're interested, one of the fine people here would be willing to sell or trade with you so you could acquire the books you may be missing.
ps. who is paulsmith56?????
 Kind of an inside joke, it was a fellow who posted once, had a lot to say in that one post, and then never posted again. It's basically a joke that all people with one post have paulsmith as their hero.

thank you for fast answering, really friendly people here!!!

I have the dark horse Doctor Solar books, nice stuff! But I didn`t know that there is also a Magnus book. I found some more Valiant reprints, than the listed ones, on this site but I can`t find it now. I try to put a link in here later.

:) with two posts, paulsmith56 is not my hero anymore? OK!

You might start talking to some of the other European traders we've got here. That would certainly help control postage costs.

Draco owns a shop in England and Virgule is in France.

Wilkommen, freund.

I´m missing Original Magnus and the two Captain Johner Numbers. I think the Captain Johner issues are completely unknown here, I´ve never seen them.

That`s correct, I know that village. It`s really near. Did you enjoy your trip to the "moon" I´ve never been in the US, to be honest I don`t like to fly such a long time, that`s horror for me.
