Media Mail Ripoff

Post by ZephyrWasHOT!! »

So, a seller's trying to charge me $10 to ship 12 comics via Media Mail.

7 different auctions, 12 books total.

Seller said he would "combine."

A sense a NPB strike coming my way.....

I'm so sick of crap like that.

I won a couple mags, then won two 8x10 images in 2 separate auctions. Seller charged me another $2 per auction win. So, I paid $3.50 for the first, then another $4 to ship TWO PICTURES!!! They were unyeilding. I almost fought it on principle, but I'd already worn myself from another seller the week before, and decided to pick my battles.

Super *SQUEE* seller who's been on eBay for 10 years wrote:
Hi,
Thanks for your email. Please consider that I paid Ebay approx. 40 cents per auction (insertion/photo/final value fee). I will have $2 involved in my shipping box, tape, protection, + printing labels. If you pay via PayPal I will be charged another $1 by PayPal. I have not even considered my time to scan and load the auctions (1 hour minimum); time to carefully select and pack the books (20-30 min.) or gas to the post office (6 miles round trip for me). If you had paid a bit higher for the books I could probably knock .20 per comic off the shipping but I am glad you won them at such low prices. I thought I was being a nice guy by deducting almost $10 shipping cost. I will only clear a few dollars on this entire sale as it stands.
If you mail a money order you can knock off $1. Otherwise the total will be $17.39.
In other words, the usual eBay song and dance when a seller doesn't want to accept responsibility for his comics not selling for what he wants to get for them.

Notice how he says "if you'd paid more for them, I would be willing to charge less for S&H"....which is pretty much a CONFESSION that he's trying to gouge me on S&H and cover his own losses....? "You pay more in the bidding, or you pay more in the S&H. Your choice."

6 auctions, 12 books, total $7.39. "S&H" $10. 12 comics. Media Mail.

From his auction listing:
I try to keep my postage/handling as reasonable as possible
and
Shipping costs: US $3.50
US Postal Service Media MailTM

I say let's just make a list of bad sellers and pin it up on top as a sticky so we can reference it when we shop on Ebay.

The seller saying he would combine in that example is very misleading . . .

He set the auction prices and if he wants to charge a per auction surcharge then he needs to state that before hand so you can factor that into your bid . . .

Absolutely. These are non-descript late 90's variants (Vampirella, in this case) that AREN'T hot, that NO one is currently looking for, but that I like to buy because I like Variants.

There was no statement in the auctions which stated "$1 per extra book" or whatever, or I wouldn't have bid.

It always comes back to that: if the seller had disclosed everything properly, if they had disclosed all the flaws the book(s) had, if they disclosed their S&H "surcharge", if they disclosed, disclosed, disclosed, I WOULD....NOT....HAVE....BID.

But, we can't have HONESTY and TRANSPARENCY on eBay. Dear God, the company would fold!

I hate that. Another thing I hate is when you pay for priority mail but the seller waits a week or more to ship it. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Another thing that drives me nuts is when they charge you $4.50 for shipping only to find out that they're using media mail shipping when they could ship the comic priority mail for that same amount.

Its stupid what some people try to charge. You could send 60 or so books safely in a priority flat rate box for less than 10 bucks, and have them in 2-3 days.

To me, I couldn't care less how they ship it as long as it arrives safely and in a reasonably timely manner. The big issue I have is, as ZWH put it, DISCLOSURE. I want to know my entire cost when I bid. To me the bid equals what I am willing to pay minus the stated shipping amount. If I think it is a $12 book and the seller is charging $10 shipping, no big deal...my max bid is $2. If he wants to "make his money on shipping" I don't care.

When shipping is not stated, I don't bid. The "I will combine shipping on multiple auctions" thing is fine, but you should state what the extra is per additional auction. Straight forward and very simple.

Package arrived. $2.81 for postage, 18 cents for DC. $2.99 total postage. Crappy box.

S&H charged to me?

$8.61.

Ridiculous.

Seller gave me song and dance about how he was now losing money.

I didn't realize it was my responsibility to subsidize eBay sellers who don't understand their market.

I don't like it when sellers try to make money on shipping costs. I don't do it, so I'm not going to allow someone else to.

True--
but you could send 40 in a smaller box that I own a ton of...and send it media mail for $4

60 books in flat priority rate box --wraped in brown paper for $5.89

Didnt mean priority was the most cost effecttive. Just saying that 60 books could fit in it, for 10 bucks max. Some of these people try to charge 10 bucks to ship 10 book media mail. Its *SQUEE*.

I dont mind a little extra shipping. Some people may charge a little more for any packing materials they use, gas, final value fees, absord paypal fees etc. I dont mind if someone charges a bit more to cover some of those costs, within reason.

Hell. this guy sgs sales or something on ebay lists his books for like 9 cents each. I asked him how much to ship 100 books. He told me it would be like 50 bucks shipping or something lol. He wanted 50 cents a book to ship.

A seller can charge whatever he wants for shipping, IMO, but you don't have to bid. S&H can be costly if the seller chooses to place a value on his time or reimburse himslef for boxes, packing, gas, etc. I hate when you pay a premium and you recieve a crappy box with used materials and the cost on the package is several dollars away from the quote.

I really hate when I pay for priority shipping and the item doesn't ship for two weeks. Why not put down the chips, get your *SQUEE* off the couch, and charge for media mail. You'll save me a few bucks and I'll get my item at the same time.

When I say that I'll combine it means that I will not charge more than S&H on one auction. If I know that a second auction will add weight or cost due to oversized packaging then I don't offer to combine.

When I bid I factor in total cost, bid price as well as S&H. If I don't like the potential total then i don't bid.

eBay doesn't share that opinion.

I do, too. Which is exactly what I did. When a seller states they'll "combine shipping" I don't expect them to take shipping costs for 7 different auctions, total up those 7 different sums, take "50%" off of that, and then tell me I'm "getting a great deal, cause they combined"

It's just another way for people to be greedy. :(

We've tried to have a "bad sellers" list here, but invariably, someone will come along and say "Oh, no, I had a GREAT transaction with so-and-so!" thus negating the point of the list.
