Messiah Complex *Spoiler Alert*
Okay, just read X-Men #205 today....
(spolier alert)
(You've been warned!)
(Last chance...)
Okay - In typical Marvel tradition, they've brought back Cable, a character thought to be dead since X-Men #200(although I never doubted it, I did think it would be a while). So where are the going with this? I've read all the books so far minus New X-Men #44 (stupid LCS didn't order me one...) and it's mildly interesting, but I can't quite seem to see where/how this is going to end (which is unusual for a Marvel book, they're usually so transparent...)
Any thoughts? How is everyone else liking it so far?

Well MC you only have to wiat a week since they've divided it over 4 books
I can completely understand though. It drives me nuts when I'm reading Astonishing X-Men to wait 4 months to get to the next storyline. Such great writing destroyed by so much lateness...
I jsut figured more people here would be reading the saga since every issue to date has out sold its print run (most going into second prints).

I've been enjoying the series so far and I'm excited to see where the story leads. The way Marvel is hyping it makes me really intrigued. I mean, Marvel hypes just about everything into the ground, but I like that the way they hype this one is basically to say, "We know that Age of Apocalypse was the last really cool event we told with the X-Men, but this one is actually good."
This attitude is especially evident if you heard them talk about at a con. Every time they said, "This is the biggest X-Men event in a decade" you could hear the implied "Not that there's much competition" in their voices. It could be a ploy to boost sales and bring back the jaded fans, but I remain optimistic that this story will actually have impact on the mutants.

I'm reading it.
The first thing the LCS owner said to me when I walked in was an apology for not having this week's chapter because of Diamond.
I like the idea. On one side, you have the X-Men, New X-Men and X-Factor. On the other side, you have Sinister and his army. And he's really put together an army. The Purifiers are in the mix, but they are boring and basically bad rip-offs of the Klan. They brought Random back into the fold, and that's always a plus. If I were writing, when the dust settled, he'd defect but not join the X-Men entirely. Maybe work on contract with X-Factor (again). Nonetheless, I would like to see more about Sinister's coalition, there's obviously friction there and he can't hold on to it for too long.
I halfway think Magneto is going to be a big player in the end of it all.

Very true, they've simulated killing him what, a half-dozen times now over the years?Jay Tomio wrote:Not reading it but it might be the first X-Men I intend to grab via collected since Morrison.
The elbac (Tomio code to avoid spoilers - Meta-crypto) bit doesn't bother me. I like the character and he's one of those guys that kind of have a built in pass.
I just got ahold of a copy of New X-Men #44 to read and they've tossed Deathstrike into the mix now too (which supposedly killed one the New X-men; Hellion)
Spoiler alert:
I went ahead and read the upcoming issue summarys for the rest of Messiah Complex (through february) and no mention of Magneto (FYI, my all time favorite villain). However: they are restarting the X-Force series again based on MC, and the next issue of X-men following Messiah Complex has been edited to read "Secret until after Messiah Complex). If going by the cover, the nex X-Force will be made up of Warpath, Wolverine, WOlfsbane, and X-23. Here is what the summary at Marvel.com says.
http://www.marvel.com/comics/onsale/lib ... ORCE_1.jpgTHE STORY:
“ANGELS AND DEMONS” Part 1 (of 6)
There are lines that the X-Men have sworn never to cross. But after the shocking events of “Messiah Complex,” Cyclops realizes that some enemies need to be dealt with permanently… and the X-Men can never know about it. Enter WOLVERINE, WARPATH, X-23 and WOLFSBANE…X-FORCE.
Parental Advisory ...$2.99
This might be old news to some of you, but I didn't know it yet so I'm sharing it now.

I thought Age of Apocalypse was awesome. It may not be "Maus," but it was a decent series of books. It was the last story that really captured the attention of a majority of X-fans. It's one of the stories that I often hear people talk about and it's one of the few series from the 90s that I regularly see people who got rid of all their books trying to re-collect.

Don't have to be Maus, just has to entertain me for 22 pages. Never really cared much for most 90's Marvel comics. It's just personal preference. Different things appeal and repulse different groups of people. I tried a lot of 90's Marvel titles includng the X-stuff at various points but once Claremont and the Image guys left I really couldn't get into the boom/bust era stuff. Most people I know gave up after a bit. I had one friend who was a super diehard X-Men fan that did get some of Age of Apocolypse (who could afford them all of it even if you wanted them?) He did like X-Man.rictor wrote:Todd Luck wrote:

I didn't get interested again in the X-titles myself til Morrison's run and I actually enjoyed several of the titles in that era. One of the many things I enjoyed about it was there were no crossovers forcing me to buy titles I didn't care about. I tended to skip all of them in the 90's anyway no matter how "earth shattering" they promised to be (still do actually).

I am not sure exactly when it happened, but I think it was shortly after Age of Apocalypse.
It was around the time Marvel bought out Malibu. The X-books changed. Not so much the spirit or the writing, but the way they looked. They looked more cartoonish, more like Malibu books. It's one thing to have Prime and Hardcase running around looking like that, I wasn't buying those at cover price at the time and buy them now for quarters. It wasn't how the X-Men were supposed to look.
I've noticed a lot of the Spiderman books of that era were awfully cartoony too.
That just kind of turns me off of those X-titles of that era. I loved the stuff of the early 90s, though.

The next issue came out today and it was just a good old fashion slug-fest. Great art, but nothing along the lines of real story progress. Cyclops thinks Cable rigged the sentinels to attack the mansion and sent Wolverine out to get him and the baby "by any means necessary."
Wish they would have covered some more parts of the story this issue. They really are pileling (sp?) on the bad guys this round aren't they? So far we've got:
-Sinister
-Maruaders
-Acolytes
-Deathstrike
-Purifiers
-Evil Sentinels controlled by one of Cassandra Novas toys
-And that mutant eating monster thing
-oh, and a 'supposedly' evil Cable
I guess we'll find out where it's going by the end of January...
And BTW, I though Age of Apocalypse was the last decent storyline for the X-Men until Morrison came around.
Woo-Hoo Post#400 on the Valiant boards and its not even about Valiant...

I finally sat down last night and read the first 8 chapters. It was good, but not great. It kept me reading from book to book, and I wanted to keep reading, but there was somethign kind of missing from it. I kept feeling like it was almost great, but not quite.
The twist with Cable was pretty neat. I wasn't a big Cable fan, but kinda started to like him with Cable/Deadpool.
Maybe I would have gotten a lot more out of this if I had been actually reading the X-books I have been getting for the last few years. I noticed I liked the X-Factor stuff with Madrox and Layla the best, and I have been keeping up with reading X-Factor.
I think the thing that bugs me most is the relationship between Xavier and Cyclops. I just don't know enough of the backstory to really appreciate it, and they aren't really getting into it much.
I'm glad it's coming out every week, and I am looking forward to the rest of the issues.

The Wolverine solo title has me really excited for the Divided We Stand storyline.
From issue 48 or so to 61 (last month), I was sure that Wolverine wasn't in mainstream Earth 616 continuity and has been a very lost book. With issue 62, they began a 4 part story arc where Wolverine is chasing Mystique across the middle east.
I'm quite excited.

I've enjoyed the Messiah Complex series, even though I missed an issue due my LCS screwing up. Luckily, there is Ebay to get me that issue. Liked how the whole thing played out and where it looks to be heading in the 'Divided we stand' crossover. X-force #1 was pretty cool and I plan on picking up Cable #1 and Young X-men #1 when they come out soon. Although I have the watercolor painting look of the art from the Cable book. The first part of 'Chasing Mystique' was very good. Even fooled me till they showed the trick at the end.
As for the past, I really liked the AoA storyline myself. Liked seeing everything shaken up and everyone free to be something different for awhile without being so enslaved to continuity. It was like a vacation. Good guys being bad and bad guys being good. Quite fun.
