Shirne Convention in LA
Just got back from the convention, its still going on for another two or three hours. Not many valiants at the show but there were TONS of people asking for valiants. I saw one guy snag a Magnus #12 for $8 and ask around for pre unity. Anyone else go? Even you unregistered lurkers? or was he someone who heard about valiant from somewhere else????

We've got the shrine convention (sometimes its in passadena) every month
Then Wizard World LA once a year and the San Diego Comic Con is only two hours away
I'm making up for all those years in Hong Kong when we had only one comic store for 7 million people and they would charge 6 times cover price on new issues and whatever they wanted to on back issues (death of superman set was $200 in 1994)

Local shows usually aren't too expensive, especially if there aren't any famous guests. There are two local shows near me, one is free admission as long as you bring in the postcard they send to you in the mail. The other show just increased admission from $1 to $2. This show is in the cramped banquet room of an old, smelly bowling alley and since it's the only local show in all of Milwaukee, it's almost always packed and you can barely move around.how much do they charge for admission at these conventions?
Wizard World shows are a lot more expensive, it was $20 last year for advance tickets. I decided not to go this year, since my main pupose in going to shows is to look for bargains, and spending the $40 for tickets for my wife and I kind of offsets the bargains somewhat.

And there's, unfortunately, nothing worth getting at the Shrine. I had to work to spend $200. I DID get the aforementioned Magnus #12 for $5, plus a New Mutants #87 for $5, Punisher's #9 and #10 for $1 each...
...and the highlight of the show....a New Gods #6 from the 1984 'reprint' mini series...it's the last issue, and it was all NEW, and led right into the Hunger Dogs graphic novel...which was the last DC work Jack Kirby did.
Also snagged Spect Spiderman #27 & #28 for $1 each, a sharp copy of DC 100 Page #15 for $5, coupla Swamp Thing Annual #2's for $1.50, and a Power Man & Iron Fist #50 for 25 cents.
But...you have to wade through mounds and mounds and mounds of overpriced crap to find the gems, and even THEN it's a crapshoot. <shrug>
And hey....I didn't get my baseball cap!

Oh, and one more thing....convention organizers REALLLLLY need to set up different admission scales for people who JUST want to go spend money on comics. If you don't want to see teh shows, the panels, the 'free' signings, the guy who played Spawn in the cartoon, etc etc etc etc etc...but JUST want to spend MONEY on comics...then you shouldn't be charged $20+ to do it.
It wouldn't be difficult. The dealers are usually in seperate rooms anyways.

I went to a regional hotel show today in Omaha/Council Bluffs.
Had pretty good luck there...
I came back with over 100 later run Valiants & Acclaims, 5 Solar #1s, Solar #2,3,
Magus #3, 7, Deathmate Advance preview, 7 Acclaim retailer review copies, Shadowman V3 4,5, an EW#27 VVSS, and a small stack of Magnus Robot Fighter #25 V.V.S.S.
Take a look

I talked to someone there who knew of this site and mine. He helped me
pull out some of the Valiants in the bins. (thanks dude!)

You're right the shrine sucks but I live 2 mins away so its not much hassle for me. This month was really thin though, probably coz of San Diego. I did manage to get Daredevil #158, Astonishing Tales #25, Uncanny #268, 266 & 103 for $5 each all in VF+ or NM-

Ok, not so much on the #268...but the REST...ARGH!!!! *SQUEE*! Where'd you find them? (This I GOTTA know!)
So, I don't feel bad for paying a net of $2 for the Magnus #12 (I talked the guy down to $20). That was you asking about the Spidey #299 and #300? The guy says '$80'. I almost laughed.

And....how was I different...(he asks, trepidatiously)?
Yeah, it's almost not worth it anymore to me. $6 to get in, who KNOWS how much in gas, 1/2 drive WITHOUT traffic....sigh. And dealers who pull out overstreet for each and every book. What a waste. I get so discouraged wading through long box after long box of crap to find these hidden gems.

There was a dealer selling DVDs, candy and books from 3 boxes. I usually buy .25c crap from him so I paid him a visit, this time he brought the wrong books. He brought is nicer ones by mistake. He said he'd give me 1/2 off on the tagged prices which must have been from 1997. There was quite a few more like older batmans, actions etc but those arent really my bag. Well they are i just dont know what is the right price to pay so i stayed away. You actually got those books? Yesterday? Yer KILLIN ME. ARGH!!!

That was me, I went back to see if you picked up that magnus, i was willing to pay his $8. I pretty much gave up on him when he quoted $80, what was he thinking the book was VF- at best. So, I don't feel bad for paying a net of $2 for the Magnus #12 (I talked the guy down to $20). I pictured the stereotype - fat fanboy. I definitly didn't think you'd be baldAnd....how was I different...(he asks, trepidatiously)?

The shrine can be a real waste some months but I like it coz the crowd is so crap dealers are willing to make crazy deals at the end of the day so that they didn't waste thier time. I once got a fine set of hulk 180-182 as part of 20 books for $10 set. I felt so bad I only took 10 booksYeah, it's almost not worth it anymore to me. $6 to get in, who KNOWS how much in gas, 1/2 drive WITHOUT traffic....sigh. Well, truth be told I didn't think you'd be so.....SHORT. What, 5'1"? <smirk> You best keep in mind, boy, that I can squash you like a bug.

Fat fanboy...<mumble, mumble, mutter>. SHEESH.
Now I don't feel bad that I almost smacked you if you got close to the Valiants.
