Vertigo?

Post by Elveen »

So I read a few vertigo books. Some Sandman, Death: the high cost of living, Fables and Jack of Fables (are these vertigo), and tonight I just read a random issue of Shade: the changing man (#33, I think).

I really dug it, kind of out there, but interesting.

So my questions is...... is every Vertigo book good?

I see some of these (Vertigo books) in the cheap bins. What recommendations do you dudes make? Are they all good?

(some of you guys know my tastes [likes and dislikes] from my "style" of posts. I would be interested in what you dudes think I might like.)

Suggestions.......

Hellblazer is hit or miss, but much more "hit" than "miss". Check out "Son Of Man" for a recent storyline.

Exterminators? DMZ? 100 Bullets? Great.

American Virgin? Y: The Last Man? Preacher? Incredible.

Fables/Jack Of Fables? Crossing Midnight? Exemplary.

The Books Of Magic are like Harry Potter all grown up, and predates it. There has always been some speculators... House Of Secrets was great as well. I enjoyed Lucifer, particularly since they *didn't* go the expected anti-Christianity route with it.

The graphic novels shine. Pride Of Baghdad was extraordinarily well done, and I could almost see it becoming a cult hit animated movie. Cairo looks phenomenal, although I haven't picked it up yet - waiting for my next paycheck to do that. The Originals was good. Sentences: The Life Of M.F. Grim was FAR better than I expected.

Haven't really been digging Testament or Scalped. Likewise, not big on Faker, The Filth, or Bite Club (I really, really wanted to like Bite Club - but I wasn't happy with it, and ended up buying the last two issues of the first mini only because I am a completionist. I skipped the second series entirely).

The best thing about Vertigo is that most of the books have a predetermined length, so you're not trying to collect an ongoing, and can wrap up complete runs rather quickly.

Well, it is really just like everything else. There are some good and some bad. It really just depends on your tastes. The books you mentioned are kind of the cream of the crop. I have not read, but also heard that Y the Last Man is a very good title. I personally only get Fables and Scalped (stories set on an Indian Reservation).

Here are a few recommendations off the top of my head: Scalped, The Other Side (trade should be out now, Viet Nam story), DMZ (future war story set in NY, NY vs the US), 100 Bullets, Hellblazer is a long running favorite.

Now go forth and read.... :thumb:

Never could get into many of them, though I tried a few in the 90's. Sandman and both Death miniseries (by Gaiman) are great and I loved the first volume of Morrison's Invisibles (I hear his Doom Patrol is good) and Chiascuro (Vertigo's Leonardo Da Vinici miniseries). There were also a couple plotlines of The Dreaming I liked (the first one especially). Other than that, everything else I picked up was just okay but very readable.

The Vertigo books that I have really enjoyed are:
Sandman,
Fables,
Y The Last man,
Preacher,
Transmetropolitan,

And books that pre-date the Vertigo imprint:
Animal Man,
Swamp Thing,
Doom Patrol.

Yep.
American Virgin? Incredible.

Elveen, let me give you the concept behind American Virgin before you grab it. It's about a kid who is known worldwide for being a highly influential TV preacher whose main message is abstinence. Something terrible happens in his life and he kind of flips out. I'm not a very religious person and I haven't read past issue 15 yet, but I could see how this series could offend some people. Still a great series, but I'm not sure yet if it's supporting or mocking religion. It ends soon, so I guess I'll find out.

I'd recommend DMZ. It's about NY in a post civil war USA. I'd recommend picking up the first trade. If you get single issues, it may not make sense depending on which issues you pick up.

The only Vertigo book that I've tried and really couldn't get into was Deadman. Not bad, but not worth $3 per month.

I'm going to pick up a few that byrneout recommended as $ permits, because the Vertigo line has impressed me greatly.

More specifically, DMZ is the story of a war corespondent who his trapped in New York. When he first arrives, he is a young reporter without much real world experience. DMZ is the story of his maturing and his experiences in the war zone.

I agree with 400 that it may be better in trades, but the individual issues are numbered so that it is easy to know when a new storyline is beginning.

I've pretty much taken it as a re-envisioning of the Book of Job, to be honest. It really seems to fit.

Try as many different titles as you can. I think Hellblazer is far superior to the others personally.

I enjoy Exterminators and would recommend it.
I tried American Virgin (first 10 issues) and did not enjoy it (good 1st issue though)
DMZ might be something you might enjoy.

American Century may not your typical Vertigo title but it was fun series about a WWII vet sick of his suburban 1950s life and he fakes his own death and becomes an unlikely adventurer in the Cold War-era. Funny and action packed with an unique look at the 1950s. 20 issues (I think) and 2 TPBs

User a 3 issue mini-series is about a young woman named Meg who family life is the crapper and escapes into her online fantasy RPG character. But when events in both her real and online lives start clashing her life will change in ways she doesn't expect. No TPB that I know of.

Blood and Shadows is a four issue mini-series that is about a poor Texas p.i. in the late 40s trailing a serial killer that has murdered his girlfriend and when the killer is revealed to be "The God of Razors" a supernatural being that has haunted mankind since the dawn of time, he chases the God of Razor through space and time. Violent is the word for this series, and believe me if you like films like Saw, Hostel, and the like then this series is for you. No TPB that I know of.

Veils-a one-shot graphic novel that combines a painted comic with models that are photographed and with the use of sets and CGI to tell the story of a lonely late 19th century woman married to the son of an ambassador living some where in the middle east that visits the harem of the local ruler where she hears the story of another woman kidnapped and sent to harem and how it parallels her own life, and with a great twist at the end. It's out in TPB and HC.

I, Paparazzi another one-shot graphic novel that uses models to tell the story of a Paparazzi who is out to get the shot of his life. Not as good as Veils but not bad either. Out in HC and probably as TPB too.

Also, its not technically a Vertigo book its Wildstorm, but Ex Machina is a great book and it has a fairly Vertigo feel.
