Recent Dead Universe Purchase
A couple of weeks ago someone stopped in my shop and asked if I bought comics. He said he had about a dozen long boxes of books and he was looking to get rid of some since he was going to be opening a tattoo shop and the start-up capital he had set aside was spent on unexpected repairs he had to do to the shop.
I told him I couldn't buy the whole collection and he said that was cool and invited me to stop by his home and pick out whatever I wanted. He and a fiend had bought out a shop that closed in 2000 and he said he had lots of weird stuff which piqued my interest.
I was able to pick up virtually the entire output of Defiant and Broadway, including the B+W Previews Broadway put out. I also got a bunch of Spoof and Parody Press books, runs of Night Man, Mantra, Prime and a bunch of other assorted Ultraverse titles.
Though a lot ended up in my personal collection, the intent of the purpose was to restock for my store's 10th anniversary. I know other shops are probably deluged with DU stuff, but virtually everyone who comes in wanting to sell their collections have stuff that is almost exclusively Marvel and DC. So this kind of collection was just what I was looking for to spice up my selection.
Since it's the 10th Anniversary, I'm doing different sales each weekend to spread things out. Last week was the comics focus (To explain why a comics focus is needed, my store started as solely an anime store, but is now a mix of both Japanese and American product.) Anyway back on topic. I set up a table full of comics to sell for 10-cents in honor of 10 years. I was just throwing fistfuls of books into the boxes with little regard to what was in there. I had people poring over the bins and had several buy things that they used to have or forgot about. There were a few random VALIANT books in there, which inspired one guy to buy them and lots of the other VALIANT titles I had on sale as well. I blew through a number of other DU series as well.
So it's been a very cool couple of weeks. In addition to getting a number of books that I needed for my collection, I got to interact with several other fans who re-discovered some of their favorite books from yesteryear.
