Published Art vs. Commission
Just wanted to get a few opinions from board members:
Do you place greater "personal value" on owning original art that has been published or on commissions that were created just for you?
In your mind, what are the goods & bads of owning each?
Which do you enjoy displaying more?
Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.
Warmly,
Brett

Re: Published Art vs. Commission
It all depends really on what original art and commission pieces we're talking about. Obviously an original piece of artwork is more valuable monetarily. And if you asked me if I would rather have the original art to the cover of Solar #1 or a commission piece of Solar by BWS, I'll take the former just because of it's importance and how much it means to Valiant history. But if you asked me if I'd rather have the original art to Booster Gold #1 or a cover recreation by Bob Layton, I'll take the latter.BrettC wrote:Just wanted to get a few opinions from board members:

So while I think original pieces are very valuable, I also place a high value on commission pieces as well because they are one of a kind pieces that ONLY you have and no one else does, and in most cases, they were done with some input from you, the buyer.
Yes, two different things. Add to that official unpublished art.siren3-4 wrote:To me it's apples and oranges . . .
You are talking about 2 completely different things to me . .
But I think I value commissions more as they are more personal . .
For all of them the artistic value is the same and important, but then it differs.
The commission I have by Jim Calafiore of my daughter is one of the most special pieces of art in my collection for me. That is very personal to me.
Published art is more driven by the same feelings that make me collect the comics themselves.

Re: Published Art vs. Commission
All other things being equal, same artist and subject matter, I think a "better" or "safer" investment is published artwork. Commissions are great, but most hold more value to the person they were made for than anyone else. Published art will have a larger following as a whole and usually will be easier to sell.BrettC wrote:Just wanted to get a few opinions from board members:

I like commissions for the personal nature of them. having an artist draw what you want it pretty cool. Having an highly collect artist draw something for you is even better.
