TPB Suggestions

Post by TKWill »

I need some advice on some TPBs for my sister. She is an avid reader of just about every book she can get her hands on and for a long time I could not convince her that comics had anything of value to read. I recently sent her Watchmen and told her to give it a shot and she really enjoyed it. She has finally seen the light that some comic books have real value in their stories. I recently purchased LOEG 1 & 2 HC and will be sending those her way once I am done reading those, I figure she will enjoy the literary references, along with Uncle Sam and the FF, Fables, and probably 1602. I am bidding on Maus (told her about the Pullitzer) and hope to have one by the time that these are sent out to her.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? She is very intelligent and, like I said, reads alot. She knows her history, thus the Maus and 1602.

Thanks for the time, guys.

I know there are other threads for this same thing, but I have cifferent circumstances since it won't be me reading these, but a non-comic reader who has no idea about continuity and the like.

Jeff Smith's "Bone."

Maybe an old Harbinger TPB?

How did I forget about Bone? Good suggestion, that is why I asked you guys.

Thanks, Slym. Any others would be appreciated.

Fables for sure.

And if Jay T. saw this thread I'm sure he would recommend Planetary. (although I have never read them, but I trust Jay's judgement).

Maybe some of DC's "Elseworlds" GN's? I know I really enjoyed "Speeding Bullets," which combined the Superman and Batman mythos in a fantastic way!

Is she dark and gothic? Neil Gaiman's "Sandman."

Into gonzo journalism? Try "Transmetropolitan."

Mildly feminist with a wry sense of humour? "Y: The Last Man."

Here is what I think she would be interested in based on your suggestions.

Bone
Rex Mundi (sounds like it is exactly what she would like :thumb: Tarheel)
Fables (I am sending her #1 already, good read, now I need to start getting the others)
Transmetropolitan (I read part of this, it was alright, she would really enjoy it I think)
Y: The Last Man (Yet another I forgot about :thumb: Slym)
U.S. (forgot to mention that I was getting that for her also)

I haven't found any info on Veils or American Century as far as a plot synopsis. Anyone?

Is this really that good? I read the Wiki on it and it really didn't blow any wind up my skirt. They said it was a mix of Supe and Spidey, that may be what got to me. I am not a fan of either.

I read issue 1 and ebayed it as I wasn't grabbed by it. I bought the hardcover on a whim (decent discount on Amazon) and thoroughly enjoyed reading the first 13 issues as a whole. The world kirkman has written feels very well realised. :thumb:

Jay Tomio wrote:There have been some good TPB recommendations already given but for the person who is an already avid reader and who enjoys quality books I'd suggest a TPB but what I think is a fundamental read for the either the fan who has just found the value of comics or looking for what the elements can accomplish is Michael Chabon's novel The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. It's probably not the Great American Novel, but perhaps just a step below.

If she likes history, try out The Age of Bronze - it's an era we all think we know, being one of the few points in history actually covered in most high school curriculum psuedo-extensively.
Thanks again guys for another recommendation. While it is not a TPB it does fit into what I am trying to do, I think. I have not read it, however I will buy it and then send it her way once I have finished it.

Thanks again :thumb:

Some great suggestions from everyone.

I'd cast another vote for Y: the Last Man.

As for Invincible, it's another book I'd recommend to anyone. I can understand the Superman meets Spiderman description that's stuck wiht the book, personally I'd describe it as

"If Superboy was cool"

It also features the best premise I never saw coming (don't read too much about it or let anyone spoil it for you).

Also, Will, a book that doesn't get enough love that I'd recommend to anyone who likes strong female characters isGrendel: Devil's Legacy (link to a Newsarama interview with Matt Wagner about it). The 2nd (and for my money best) itteration of Grendel, requires no prior knowledge of Hunter Rose et al and is a brilliant read.

V For Vendetta, just read the comic version again for the first time in years after watching the movie a bunch of times. As much as I like the movie, I think the comic is a special work all of it's own. Good stuff.

Rex Mundi was going to be my suggestion.

Walking Dead is terrific.

Invincible is a fantastic super-hero book. If you or she digs superheroes, this is worth a try. It may take til Volume 3 to hook you.

If she's into either of these, you might also include my phone number.

Assuming she's in her 20s...

Sorry, C-Lo. She is in Austin, has a live in boyfriend and doesn't like guns.

I haven't found any info on Veils or American Century as far as a plot synopsis. Anyone?
Veils is a graphic novel about an 18th century Englishwoman living in the Middle East with husband, who is the son of the British Ambassador.
It's a cold and loveless marriage and she's not fond of the place.
When her and her husband are invited to the local ruler she meets his harem and the old woman that is charge of harem and tells her a story.
I would tell you more but that ruin it.
It's photographic with sets, period costumes, and CGI backgrounds and the old woman's story is in a painted comic book story.

The very under appreciated American Century is about the adventures of a Jewish WWII veteran American fighter pilot who after the war returns to home only he becomes so bored and unhappy with his job, marriage, and his suburban life (his wife is real piece of work),when the CIA calls to tell him that they need his help and since he feels that he's done his service to his country and that he's had it with his life.
So he fakes his own death to get away from it and heads to a small South America country. There he gets accidentally involved in a CIA backed plan to crush a rebellion that threatens an American corporation's interest in the country's bananas plantations. This arc was based on (or inspired by) real events.
After that he has adventures that take him all over the world.
