Magnus Talent Contest

Post by Ryan »

My computer's been down for a few for a few weeks so sorry if this has already been mentioned.

In the new Previews today there is an ad in the Ibooks section that says they are having a contest to determine the illustrator, penciller, inker, or colorist for the upcoming third Magnus graphic novel. The writer is Louise Simonson and character desigener is Steranko.

Should be fun for all the artists here! :D

Were there two previous Magnus graphic novels that have been published?

Maybe.

If you're referring to Magnus: Steel Nation and Magnus: Invasion,
then yes, there are two "graphic novels" in print.

If you're referring to the two-volume Magnus books planned for
1991-1992, reprinting the Gold Key stories, then no...
those books were cancelled and never saw print.

Is there a difference between a "tpb" and a graphic novel? I always thought of Steel Nation and Invasion as tpb's. I also thought I had noticed graphic novels sometimes kept in a slightly different location in a store because the art is more graphic than some books that are just a collection of bound comic books.

My main concern was just that the "third" graphic Magnus novel coming out will be the "first" Magnus graphic novel from Ibooks.

I think the ad means the third from Ibooks. It says to bring your work to the San Diego Comicon in July, so I assume the first 2 GNs are already in production.

So what does everyone think about Louise Simonson being the writer for at least one of the Magnus GNs? I think it's good they're going for solid comic vets instead of 'hot' names. And if I remember right Louise worked for a long time under Shooter at Marvel. Steranko should give some funky designs too, should be fun.

It sounds like excellent choices and I agree "solid" is good. I am so much looking forward to this. Emotionally it would also feel great if the people behind the previous relaunch attempt got a shot at it also (Chris Sotomayor, Sean Clauretie and Damon Hacker), as they demonstrated both talent and commitment.

Magnus you don't happen to have the pencils that sean did or the inks that damon finished do you. Last time I spoke with sean he no longer had them, damon had them and I have since lost touch with damen. I figured if damon didn't have them, you more than likely did.

Yes, me too. Pity as he (and the others involved) were wonderful to chat with.

I found this news release about Louise Simonson being the Magnus writer from about a month ago http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread. ... adid=13398. It says the first one should be out in Spring. Simonson has been writing prose junior novels about Batman, Superman, and Justice League for the last few years so it makes sense that she will write the prose Magnus novels when/if they come out as well.
